| One of the most brutal cases in American unsolved mysteries is that of the Zodiac Killer. Not only was he a brutal killer but he was driven by no sadistic or sexual motive rather that of recognition, acomplishment. He felt he needed the next step in Maslow's hierarchy of needs, and his need was to be famous, and if he couldn't be famous, then he would be infamous. In California in the late 1960's five people were killed and two others were severely injured, the killer still remains unidentified. The killer generally chose remote locations such as lovers lane's outside of the San Francisco area. On the 5th of July 1969, a man with a course voice telephoned the Vallejo Police Department and said "If you will go one mile east on columbus parkway to a public park, you will find the kids in a brown car. They have been shot with a 9mm Luger, I also killed those kids last year, goodbye." The police were stunned but sure enough they found the bodies, however the killer didn't realize that the male youth was merely unconcious, though severely injured, he was revived. He was able to give an adequate description of the killer. On August 1st, the killer sent a collection of letters to three seperate newspapers, each containing details signifying that the author was indeed the killer, and each signed with a circle with a cross through it, the sign of the Zodiac. The killer also included a word cipher with the riddle which would later be broken. "I like to kill people because it is so much fun, it is more fun than killing wild game in the forest, because man is the most dangerous animal of all. To kill something gives me the most thrilling experience, it is even better than sex. The best part will be when I die, I will be reborn in paradise, and then all i have killed will become my slaves. I will not give you my name because you will try to slow or stop my collecting of slaves for my afterlife." The Zodiac's next victims were actually killed via a different method instead of the usual shootings, he instead hunted young couples and tied them up and stabbed them repeatedly to death. The male survived and managed to identify the zodiac logo on the man, his unfortunate partner died from her 24 stab wounds. It would seem at this point that the Zodiac killer had a loathing of romance, or rather on the other hand it was erotic to him to take part in others romantic lives, no matter how severe that part may be. But his next and last victim would contradict all of that. Paul Stine a taxi cab driver in San Francisco was shot in the back of the head by his customer. Soon after the Zodiac killer produced letters claiming he was going to blow up a school bus and enclosed a piece of Paul Stine's clothing along with it to ensure his identity, luckily this last threat was never followed through. Zodiac wanted to be heard and even proposed an interview through the phone lines on national television, when it came down to it, he didn't call. Paul Stine would be his last known victim but his strange tale is still being published, read and talked about today. |
