| Tiberius became emperor of Rome when he was 56, he was a bad tempered introverted man. Earlier in life he had been forced to divorce a wife who he adorred and this made him very bitter. The reason behind the divorce was so that he could marry the daughter of the emperor Augustus, Julia. Tiberius was not liked by his soldiers he was a strict General, but he cared not what his soldiers thought of him. "Let them hate me, so long as they obey me" he was known to have said. He held the same sort of attitute towards the people of Rome. However, Tiberius again is a good example of a Jekyll, and Hyde type character he would visit the sick, and apologize as emperor to pourper if he had put them out. When Tiberius retired he left to the island of Capri. It was here where historians, mainly Seutonius would make record of his most awful actions. Some of his actions are "too vile to discuss" states Seutonius. He engaged in voyeurism which was the least of his perversities, as he arranged orgies of young men and women to watch. He trained little boys to swim with him there they would chase him and when finally catching him they would have to perfom felatio on him. He was a filthy old man, he even sexually assaulted babies. Once during a ceremony of sacrifice, Tiberius could withstand the religious lengthiness of the sacrifice no longer and hurried outside, where he would indecently assault two of the sacred trumpeters, they protested, which led to them having their legs broken. A fisherman once came upon the island and presented a great mullet, not realizing that the fishermans intentions were only kind, the scared Tiberius ordered his guards to rub the mans face with the mullet until the scales skinned him down to the bone. Crying out in agony the man shouted "Thank heaven I did not bring Caeser that huge crab I also caught." You have to admire the fishermans sense of humour even in death. However Tiberius lacked that kind of humour and sent for the crab to finish the ordeal. Every crime became a capital one, and there was not a day that went by without an execution. Strangling a virgin was forbidden, a minor discrepency to Tiberius who had them violated before their execution. When meeting his death at the age of 78, probably from one of his own guards. The people of Rome rejoiced. |
