Faced with the possibility of failing an IQ test, Bart switches exam with class brain Martin Prince. When school psychologist Dr. Pryor studies the results, he interrupts the meeting Principal Skinner is having with Marge and Homer on Bart's vandalism acts to report that Bart is a genius. Bart is then transferred to a new and more challenging school.

On his first day at the Enriched Learning Center for Gifted Children, Bart feels out of place among other students who have advanced academic skills. One pupil can even speak palindromic. At home, however, Bart enjoys the newfound attention Homer is giving him. Hoping to stimulate and nurture her son with a little culture, Marge buys the family tickets to the opera. There, Homer, Bart and even Lisa make fun of the people on stage.

Ostracized by his genius classmates, Bart visits his old school, where he is rejected by his friends and labelled a 'poindexter'. When Bart's science experiment explodes and nearly destroys his new school, he confesses to Dr. Pyor that he merely swapped the tests and Martin Prince is the real genius. Bart returns home, while Homer is bathing Bart from the explosion, he tells Homer that he switched tests, t, and although it was a stupid thing to do, he is glad that he is closer together. An irate Homer chases a nude Bart around the house.
