I am a fan of the Seattle Mariners. I have followed them since I moved to the Pacific Northwest in 1994. I've been a faithful fan in the lean years as well as the great ones.
The Seattle Mariners have habe two homes since they were 'founded' in 1977. Their original home was the Kingdome. The Kingdome was also home to the Seattle Seahawks (NFL). It was a covered stadium with an Astroturf floor. In 2000, the Kingdome was imploded.
Safeco Field hosted their first Major League game in July 2000. It has a retractable roof and real grass. The moving roof is necessary in rainy Seattle! Safeco Field was the host of teh All-Star Game in 2001.
The Seattle Mariners have had their share of notable players. Ken Griffey Jr and Alex Rodriguez began their careers in a M's jersey. Randy Johnson and Edgar Martinez made their names while in Seattle.
The Mariners current superstar is Ichiro. Ichiro joined the team in 2001 and helped provide the spark that led to the record 116-win season. In 2004 Ichiro set a MLB records of hits in one season. Ichiro came from Japan's baseball league, where he was the seven time batting champion. When he siigned with the Mariners he made history as the first Japanese born position player (non-pitcher) to play in the Major Leagues. |
