I want to tell you a tale. A tale of history, a tale of heroes, and villains. You have all learned the history of the founding of our Empire, and you have all at least heard a few stories about how our Empire lost our Emperor Michael Roele.

But you have probably not heard all that much from the score of years that followed
the end of House Roele. It was a time of many internal wars, and struggles to support
different claimants, and candidates for the Iron Throne.

While Diemed today are outshined in some areas by a few other realms,
at that time Diemed was still the centre of culture, and learning in Anuire.
And while in the century that followed the death of Michael Roele, much of the
records that was made where lost, due to wars and skirmishes, but those made and
stored in the Dieman Archives was kept safe, and treated as the treasures they are.

Prelude:

After the Civil War, when Michael Roele and the Empire warred against the rebel Arch-Duke Boeruine, as he and his minions rebelled against the Empire. Michael and his lovely wife lived a short time of peace. When the news came that Michael would have an heir, the Empire rejoiced. But the Gorgon had used his foul magic, which lead to the death of the Empress, and the Empire without an heir. Michael in his grief vowed to kill the Gorgon, and the united Empire marched to Kal-Saitharak. A big host marched, and with the help of the gods, and the anger and outrage the soldiers of the Empire felt, they won every battle intill the last against the Gorgon, and his elite. Many soldiers and nobles had been lost on the way, but nothing compared to the onslaught that commenced. Many of the noble families lost their patriarchs that day, and many families lost their fathers. The Imperial Army marched home with nothing but grief in their hearths.

The First Years - The Time of Rebuilding:

The year that followed was a time when the Empire, the Duchies, and the noble Houses of Anuire invested a lot of heirs. The Imperial Chamberlain restored order in the Imperial City, and the Empire at large tried to get to grips with the new reality of an Empire without an Emperor. The only Ceremony of Investiture recorded in full, are about Landen Diems. His father had been killed in the last battle against the Gorgon, leading the Vanguard. Under the Vows of Crowning, Landen made the following vow, "I will give my Soul to Haelyn, my life to the Empire, and my love to my subjects".

The great Duchies of Avanil and Boeruine both made it clear
that they where the most powerful in Anuire.
Some speculate how long before a war would errupt between
the Dukes of these Duchies.

Present day - The Battle for the Imperial Throne:

Today several of the old 12 Duchies no longer exist. Some of the old families are gone forever. But the battle for the Iron Throne rages like never before.

Like the first years, the families of Avan and Boeruine are formost in the battle, but other strong candidates also exist. And in the end, it will be the fence sitters, who will decide who will stand supreame, by allying with one of the many candidates over the others.

The Duke of Diemed, while being one of the strong nobles of Anuire, have given no move to make himself considered a candidate for the Iron Throne. He seems more intent on once more making his Duchy whole.
