(Pronunciation of vowels): The vowels in Spanish are always pronounced the same way. In order that you get the right sound we will attach to each vowel an English word, which will give you a good reference for the proper pronunciation. Practice the pronunciation of vowels reading the words in Spanish:

3. Vocabulary: Hola (Hello), Buenos días (good morning), ¿Cómo está Usted? (How are you?), Muy bien (very good), gracias (thank you), ¿Cómo te llamas? (What is your name?), Mi nombre es José (my name is Joseph).

Learn the words and short sentences in Spanish, and memorize their meaning in English. You will be asked to say in English what the words and sentences mean in Spanish. Test on Thu. 8/26.

 

4.      Grammar: Practice on the WEB page of “Learn Spanish” on “Tutorial de Español”: practice listening to the first 5 links (you will need speakers or ear-phones).

 

5. Dictate: Copy the reading assignment several times for practice. You will be asked in the classroom to write the short sentences as a dictation. Test on Thu. 8/26.

 

6. Conversation / Reading: ¡Hola!  - ¡Buenos días!.  - ¿Cómo está Usted?  - Muy bien, gracias. ¿Cuál es su nombre?  - Mi nombre es José. Click on “Reading 01” for listening of the sentences. Reading test on Fri 8/27. Start memorizing these sentences, which will be tested as conversation the next week.
