About the Artist
Duhirwe Rushemeza life has been marked with incredible twists and turns, great tragedy and wonderful fortune. The artist was born in Kigali, Rwanda on January 21, 1977.  The family embarked on a journey that has shaped the woman Duhirwe is today, living in such places as Germany, Texas, New York, and Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire (West Africa). Duhirwe attended Spelman College focusing on Art and pre-Architecture.
As any family in Rwanda, her family was affected by the Genocide in 1994 that claimed the lives of close to one million people in a three-month period. In a trip she took to Rwanda shortly after the Genocide, Duhirwe was touched by the plethora of orphaned children on the streets with nowhere to turn. As she began to concentrate on her work, she began a series that portrayed children who'd been victims of war crimes, focusing on their emotional trials. Although the pieces have a sad tone, she focuses on putting the energy of love and beauty in them. For Duhirwe, the cutting into the linoleum has become a meditative journey, one that she hopes will be shared by the viewer.
