from THE POET series

3.

On TV, the poet
watches as they reveal
the way the Incas built

walls. Men, women, children
(one hundred and fifty
people) drag the heavy

stones down from the mountains,
pulling them with ropes. Some
stones do not make it all

the way down and they lie
by the side of the road,
waiting. An old man says,

"
Estan cansadas." They
are tired. They will not
be so easily moved.
