Pfc. Leo J. Hudson, 24, is in the Armored Forces division, training at Fort Knox, Kentucky. Formerly employed at the Swanson Cheverolet garage in Grand Rapids, before entering the service, Leo is completing training as a tank mechanic.
Pvt. Harold A. Hudson, last member of the family to enlist, is in training with the combat engineers at Camp Beale, California. He is married, and his wife and little daughter are living with her sister in Chicago for the duration.
Mr. and Mrs. Hudson and their family moved to Warba twenty years ago. They bought a farm a few miles out of town, and father, mother and children started to carve out productive fields from the stumps and brush. Today one entire forty acre tract is cleared and in field, and the timber line is moving back on more land. The farm is a family affair, says Mr. Hudson, and he intends to have it in as good shape when the boys and girls return from the army as it was when they left.
Dairying has been the major industry on the Hudson farm, with nine cows producing when all are in milk. There are several head of young stock growing up, a team, and some other animals. A good flock of hens helps pay the grocery bills, now that eggs are so high priced. Mrs. Hudson works right with her husband in the fields, since the children are gone to war. She also helps him operate a small portable sawmill, with which they are cutting up some lumber to be used later in erecting a new house and new barn.
Quite often, when the boys and girls of the Hudson family write home, their letters are in verse, some is very acceptable verse. Mr. Hudson says that it is a family trait, this verse writing, for he is a distant descendant of the famed Robert Burns, a Scotch poet.
