05/20/2000 Infirmary, White Tower, Tar Valon Square in shape, this room is most often abuzz with activity. It contains the normal implements of a teaching infirmary, in fact, it is extremely well stocked with all manner of things: cots, jars, bottles, syringes, bandages, cloths, cabinets, shelves, books and tables along with plenty of hot water. The air has that sterile smell associated with the constant use of redwort, tinged with the unpleasant prickle of witchhazel. While most of the Healing is done via the One Power at the Tower, there are many minor medical situations that are dealt with the old fashioned way. There are several areas curtained off, for patients' privacy as well as for instructional usages. This is a teaching infirmary for the Yellow Ajah, after all. Beds in cheerful colors are lined up in neat rows, providing a comfortable place to sleep after a Healer's tender ministrations. Windows are kept wide open to all for light and fresh air. Denn'ryiel is tending to patients, as is often the case. She seems to be familiar with most of them, by now. Waking up from behind the curtain pulled around his bed, Neelkan lets out a slight gasp, sitting up quickly. He hates sleeping... Grrr. If only his body didn't need it. And yes, he's still living in the infirmary. He asked to stay to look after Redd at least until his room in the Trainee area is ready. Moving to slide off the bed, having slept fully clothed, he pushes aside the curtain and looks around, glaring a little at most those he sees as they are women, but then his glareing stops and he grins at Denn as he notices her. "Mornin' Denn. 'r... afternoon, 'r evenin', whiche'er." When one sleeps the strange hours he does it's hard to know for sure. Denn'ryiel chuckles and smiles to Neelkan, nodding to her friend. "Afternoon, I think. Don't quote me on that though. No luck finding a new room yet, I gather?" Reaching up to scratch at his hair, until it returns to it's usual ruffled state, Neelkan continues to grin as he answers, "Ye'h. 'ey're lookin' int' it though. Plus I got stuck in 'ere lookin' after Redd, with his fever 'n all. After what happened yesterday I'm surprised 'ey let m' stay 'nother night." Denn'ryiel looks a bit surprised and perplexed by Neelkan's words. "After last night? Did something happen after I left? Or did you have something to do with Espiria's unusual condition?" She turns to look at Redd as she speaks, to make certain the young one isn't burning up too much. "Oh! Ya didn't hear... No, I had nothin' t' do with Espi's... condition." Neelkan says, scratching at his hair and the grin fading a minute, "But I was... I tried..." He trails off and shakes his head, lowering his hand, "I was tryin' t' help 'er, 'n one of the Yellows wouldn't let 'er leave.. 'n.. well.. I ended up yellin' at the woman. One of the Gaidin..uh.. punished me." He's -not- saying what the punishment was, and the look in his eyes says he really doesn't want to. Denn'ryiel ahs and nods. She glances over to Espiria's bed, and noting it absent, assumes that Neelkan was at least partly successful. "Sedai have been known to command Kings... you'll find most Gaidin don't tolerate yelling at them at all." She says it sympatheticly, as best she can. "I hope they didn't revoke their offer." "He didn't. He said 'at if I planned t' join offically I'd better learn t' mind m' tongue 'n stay calm, but she was doin' somethin' she shouldn't've, if 'ey'd've just listened t' m' I could've explained 'at..." Neelkan shakes his head with a small sigh. "I dunno. I was just doin' what I thought was best f'r Espi. She was cryin'! She didn't need e'eryone in the place starin' at 'er..." Denn'ryiel nods, and sits down nearby Neelkan. "I understand, Neelkan. I know you were doing what you felt was best. But if you want people to listen, you should try not to shout. They aren't hearing you not because you're too soft, but because they don't choose to. Most Sedai would ignore anything shouted angrily at them, and most Gaidin too." "I spoke t' 'em civily at first..." Neelkan grumbles under his breath and folds his arms softly, "Light, I e'en pleaded with the women t' just trust m'... but she wouldn't let it go 'n..." He sighs and shakes his head. "I just don't understand. I really did try..." He even used her title and said please. Denn'ryiel sighs and nods. "Well... Some people just have... prejudices, I guess." The irony, saying something like that to the woman-hater. "She must have equated the value of your information with her own guidelines on how important you were. At least you weren't afraid to stand up for Espiria." "I ain't 'fraid'a nothin'." Neelkan says softly, though he should amend that with a few things he is afraid of, but they are trival things, and a woman who happens to be Aes Sedai isn't a part of them. Sure, he wasn't thrilled with the idea when he first woke up here, but... oh well. "'n anyway, I wasn't 'bout t' just stand there while she's cryin' 'n scared and worried she's gonna get in trouble 'n talkin' 'bout 'Mother' 'r somethin'... 'n 'at woman was tryin' t'..." He trails off and shakes his head, "Ah, ne'ermind. But nothin'd keep m' from helpin' m' friends..." That last part is added rather softly as he sits back down fully on his bed. Denn'ryiel smiles softly and nods, in agreement. "Well, I'm going to miss our talks, that is for certain," she comments, looking out the window into a gray sky. "Mother by the way is the Amyrlin Seat, the head of the Tower here." Freeze. Mother? Amyrlin Seat? "Kaomi's 'is Mother e'eryone was talkin' 'bout?" Neelkan blinks a few times, looking surprised. Yes. He will probably always call her by her first name. "E'eryone seems so worried 'bout what she thinks, always sayin' 'Gotta report 'is t' the Mother' 'n other such things... She seemed real nice 'en I met 'er..." Denn'ryiel's smile blossoms a little more and she nods again. "Yes, Mother is a rather nice person, but she is also a person of great authority. That is why everyone is concerned about what she thinks and says. She is by far the most powerful person here." "Oh..." Neelkan leans forward a little, thinking on that for a moment. "Well, if she's the most powerful person, m'be I should ask 'er t' get m' earrin's back!" He let the small shock fade away and is smirking again." Those famous earrings again. Nope. He still has not gotten them back. How rude. He's sitting on the bed he slept in last night, clothing a little wrinkled as he slept in them, and his hair is in it's usual state of general mayhem. His hair's a lot like him. It's extremely hard to tame. And extremely weird, with those white streaks. Denn'ryiel laughs softly and nods. "Well, try to make certain there aren't any Gaidin around when you do. Some of them don't take well to asking the Amyrlin what they would deem to be irrelevant questions." She takes a moment to make certain none of the other patients are in need of help. "So has one of the trainees or Gaidin explained bonding to you yet?" she asks, idly. Espiria heads into the infirmary with her arms holding a large bolt of white cloth. She can't really see where she's going with the thing in her arms that way, so she bumps into a few things on her way in. She seems a bit preoccuppied as well and doesn't look up for the time being to see if anyone is around her. "I don't 'ink it's irrelevant. Took m' a year t' earn 'ose earrin's." Neelkan shrugs a little, then pauses at the question on bonding. "Eh... No. I went t' talk t' Aliana 'bout 'at actually." He stops, suddenly blushing a little. His conversation with the Green... let's not go into it. The blush fades a few seconds later and he adds, "It sounds kinda.. I dunno. Not plannin' t' get bonded, 'r nothin'... I'm just gonna surprise ya all by goin' through the program at record speed!" And he sounds like he means it, raising his hands a little to emphasize. He doesn't notice his friend right away, unfortunately. Denn'ryiel is situated a bit out in the open area in front of the beds, so hopefully Espiria will look up before waling into her chair. She laughs, a little more loudly this time. "So you chose to learn about bonding from a Green, eh?" She tries not to give Neelkan a look that won't add to his embarrassment, but she isn't doing well. "There aren't any points though for finishing first, Neelkan. You might want to take your time." Of course, Denn's probably not the right person to be talking about that. Espiria hefts the material a bit more and does see Denn with wide eyes just before she would have walked into her. She hears Neel's voice, chuckling softly as she turns with the bolt in her arms still and grins over to him. "I know you'll do it too Neel, but Denn'ryiel is right. Take you're time and learn /everything/ you can. It's all important..even the little things." She tips her head to see the table on one side and finally drops the bolt there with a sigh. That blush flares up again as the Green is mentioned. He didn't KNOW!! Just.. someone mentioned... Bleh. Neelkan lowers his head a little, so that his hair can fall in front of his face and obscure the blush a little, but then at Espiria's voice he looks back up and grins. Good. "Well, we'll see, but I still say I'll surprise ya all!" He thinks he can do anything faster then anyone else. Didn't help much when he was made Second of a group he'd only been a member of for a year, and he was the youngest member too. Espiria smiles as Denn steps out of the room, turning to her bolt of material with a heavy sigh. She pulls out something to cut it with and begins making long strips of fabric for bandages. "So..it seems you have been having a nice chat with Denn. I hope it was fruitful?" She doesn't seem overly upset, but she does still seem a bit preoccuppied by something as she pulls the cutter along the fabric for another strip. "Ye'h. Finally found out who the Mother person ya all kept talkin' 'bout was." Neelkan says with a shrug, speaking in a softer voice then usual, as if to hint that he doesn't want to be overheard, even if the subject right now is nothing that shouldn't be. "But other 'en 'at, 'ere wasn't much t' talk 'bout really..." Except where he told the woman about how he got in trouble in this very place just a short while ago. He didn't say he literally got carried out and 'cooled off' as the Gaidin called it, but he told what happened to cause his punishment. Espiria chuckles and nods, head tipping back your way with curiousity in her eyes as she takes the stack of her material strips over to a chair and takes a seat. She smiles and begins rolling them, not having to look down to her hands to see what's being done. She's done this far to many times to not know by now. She chuckles, shaking her head. "I..wanted to thank you for yesterday. I mean..you shouldn't have, but..I kinda glad you stood up for me. I wanted to..I just didn't feel like I can at times. And how I was feeling...Well, I didn't have the mind at the time to try to convince her otherwise. I'm just sorry..that what happened to you happened." She sighs, looking down to her hands for a moment before she looks up, frown on her features. "I never meant for you to get..dunked....Really.." "What d'ya mean I shouldn't've? Of course I should've. Ya were... upset 'n 'at wo--eh... 'at Aes Sedai wasn't helpin' nothin' by forcein' ya t' stay 'ere..." Neelkan says with a small shrug, his voice still lowered, looking down at the floor for a moment as he speaks. "I know the... Aes Sedai 'r in charge 'round 'ere 'n all, but... 'ey can't just... it was just wrong what she was doin'." He sighs and shakes his head, letting his hair spill around and rest on his forehead and in front of his eyes in a few places. "'n don't worry 'bout it. I was just doin' what I'd do f'r any friend..." Even a dunking won't get that out of him. He'd jump to a friend's defense even if that Michael guy were around again. Espiria smiles shyly, "Thank you again, then. For just being you...." She chuckles, hands going back to her wrapping as she sighs softly. Things get so strange sometimes. So strange that she doesn't even want to think about them. But there are stable things in her life. Her friends for one. They act as an anchor to what would otherwise be ground that never stayed strong undr her feet. And she so needs that right now. Stable ground that is. She chuckles, glancing down the row for a moment as she softly questions, "So...what have you been doing, Neel? You..just been staying here for the time being? I thought they were going to get you a room in the trainee wing." "I stayed 'nother night t' look after Redd, but... I should be gettin' a room soon." Neelkan shrugs again. "'n I can't wait! Believe m'... Nothin' is worse 'en sleepin' with a bunch'a people all 'round ya." Especially when someone doesn't sleep very well. He doesn't like waking up from one of his particularly bad dreams and having someone bending over and looking at him strange. And even more if that person happens to be a woman! What a thing to wake up to in the morning... Shudder. "But other 'en just being 'ere... not much. Helpin' ya out was prolly the most excitin' thing 'at's happened t' me." Exciting? Now he's making it sound like it was a good thing... Well it took away any boredom he'd been experienceing, that's for sure! Espiria sighs and nods quietly for a moment before she glances over to you, her face wearing a slightly serious frown. "Never hope for excitement, Neelkan. If you get it...you might not like what you've asked for." She sighs, looking back down to her hands as she ponders the truth of those words. Wasn't she always the one wanting her Da's stories? Tales of fighting and far off lands? Didn't she always hope for a chance to see them? She shivers just a bit, hands stopping their wrapping as she shakes her head. Yes...always be careful of what you wish for. It may just come true. "Excitin' is better 'n sittin' 'round bored." Neelkan says with a small shrug, then blinks. Oh... Sorry. He just realized how you've taken those words and the serious frown and everything... his own smirk fades and he slides off the bed, moving a little closer. "Hey.. don't look so worried, 'kay? I know... I shouldn't've said 'at... Sorry. I don't think 'fore I speak very often..." Or at all... "Uh, e'erythin'll be a'right. I know it will. Whate'er memories yer havin', 'n all, yer still -you-. Yer still Espi." Memories? Whoops. He shouldn't have said that... and he knows it. He glances around a little and searches ineffectively for a way to recover himself. Silly boy peeking in your notebook and letting his tongue move before his brain... Espiria darts a glance up, blinking. What did he just say? She drops her chin just a bit, wanting to say something but there is enough shock to stop her for a moment. She blinks again, taking a deep breath. "Neel....How did you know." Her eyes remain on you, not mad or anything...mearly concerned about how you would have known. "How...." Arg. Neelkan looks a little flustered for a moment, then scratches at his hair with one hand, looking away. When he looks back, bright blue-green eyes full of concern, but also a little frustration at himself. "I uh.. well.. ya see.." He takes a deep breath, keeping his voice down before asking, "'at is what it is 'en, eh? Yer havin'... memories? When ya have 'ose.. uh.. whate'er 'ey are. Yer someone else... in 'nother place 'n.. Age." Did he figure it out? is he smarter then he looks? No... He's just as sneaky as he looks. But he's not going to confess to taking a peek in her notebook. Not right away. Espiria shakes her head slowly, "No...Please..You don't want to know about this. You don't. You don't want to be involved in this, Neelkan. it's very dangerous...and I can't even begin to understand what it all means." Yes, she heard your attempt to cover up how you know, but for now she's just got to convince you to not think about it. "There..are those involved who are deadly. One..who is deadlier than anyone else, Neel." Her tone turns a bit somber at the last and her voice almost cracks at the mentioning of it. But she's got to convince you to forget about it. Just leave it alone. She shakes her head, eyes tipping upwards to you. "You...don't know what is going on, Neel. Please..just forget you ever said anything about it?" Not that she couldn't use a friend who knows, she's just scared for you. "I won't forget 'bout it Espi. 'n I don't care who's involved other 'en the fact 'at -you- are." Neelkan says, reaching a hand out to lightly grip your arm. His voice is firm and almost reaching an commanding tone, which is ruined by the fact that he has that accent of his. His voice is still soft though, so that unless someone was trying to overhear they probably wouldn't. "If it's so dangerous 'n deadly f'r m' t' know, 'en it must be e'en more dangerous f'r ya, 'n like I said 'fore, I'm not gonna sit by 'n let -any- of m' friends be put in danger. Whate'er is goin' on, I'm not gonna let ya go through it alone, 'kay?" Light, he has no idea what he's getting himself into, he just knows it's really bad. And that your scared. But he isn't. He doesn't look scared at all. If anything he looks determined. Espiria looks at you for a moment, shivering a bit as she recalls all those nights of nightmares sent to her. "You..don't understand. 'He's' involved, Neel. I..don't want 'Him' to hurt anyone. I don't care about myself, but I couldn't bear for anyone else to have to....deal with the likes of 'Him'. Even..locked up He still has fingers that are long reaching. And...He wants me for some reason." She seems on the verge of tears now, but she shoves them back, choking on them as she tries to keep control of herself. The shiver happens again though at even thinking of 'Him'. "He..would think twice about wiping away anyone who got in his way... Mother said..she wouldn't let 'Him' get me, but...what if there is nothing they can truely do for me. What if what happens...is supposed to happen. Oh..Light..I'd rather die than have him touch me." The more he hears, the more that determined look shows in his eyes and expression. Neelkan keeps his hand on your arm, squeezing a little as you seem to need what little comfort he can offer right now, "Espi... I'm not gonna let 'im take ya either. I believe 'at Kaomi would do whate'er it would take t' keep ya safe, n I will too. I know, I'm not a powerful Aes Sedai 'r nothin', but if... if I can't do anythin' at all, 'en at least let me be here f'r ya. As a friend..." He sighs, having no idea what else to say to make you feel better, so he just lets his voice trail off while he continues to look at you with those determined peacock blue eyes that along with his hair and fan gave him his nickname. Espiria shivers a bit, head dropping forward before she whispers. "I..don't want Ba'alzamon to hurt you, Neel." No she won't meet your eyes now. She feels that she's probably chased her best friend off with that simple statement. Not even Gaidin's can stop a shudder at that name and that's not even the worse of the names someone can know. She shakes her head, "I..just don't want you to get hurt, Neel." She knows that you'll still do as you want to, but she can always hope..can't she? Her eyes do dart up though, wide and afraid. "Oh..No..I never should have said that. Mother will...be so angry with me. please..oh please don't let her know that you know. Please?" She shivers now from how angry Mother would be if she knew. "I..was never supposed to tell anyone. Oh Light....why is this happening to me?" That name causes him to blink. Neelkan's grip on your arm loosens a little. It takes a little while for him to make any other response to any of it. In fact, it's up until the question of why it's happening to you... "Espiria..." he whispers softly under his breath, then shakes his head once, letting his hair spill around his eyes again. "Ba.. Ba'alza... Ba'alzamon is the.. the one after ya..?" For a few moments he wants to let go and back away... but he pushes that urge away. This is his friend. He doesn't care if the Dark One himself is after her. (And oddly that's literal in this case...) "I won't tell anyone I know, but... but don't worry 'bout 'im hurtin' m' Espi. I only care 'at he might hurt ya." He pauses for a moment, then adds on in an even softer voice then he was already speaking in, his grip reaffirming itself on your arm, "I'd gladly die t' protect a friend, Espi. 'n I mean 'at." Then he throws out a smirk (though it's forced) and adds on in a more cheerful voice, "'sides. Yer not gettin' rid'a m' 'at easily." Espiria sighs deeply and nods to your question at first, sure beyond all words that she's chased you off because of telling you this. She's looking away from you, shivering as she battle to keep control of her fear. She looks back to you, concern, fear, worry, all jumbled into her glance as she looks at your face. She shakes her head slowly, sure that your next words will be to back away and she's ready for it. Expecting it. Who would want to be friends whith something like /that/ after her? She positive that you've probably decided that flight is better in this case...rather than fighting against something that can't even be touched. Well, not by normal means anyway. She stays silent during your silent time, glancing up with a shocked blink as you speak again. She sits stunned for a time, "You...aren't leaving me then?" She was so sure that you'd drop her as a friend. So sure... Not that she's not pleasantly surprised, but she's also fearful for you now that you've stated your case. "I...don't know what to say, Neel. I...never could have asked for a better froend than what I have in you..right at this moment." She smiles shakily, trying to put back on her brave face so that noone looking will notice her being so upset. "I'd..never want to get rid of you, Neel. I..just didn't want to involve you in something like this. You..have enough to think about..without me adding to it." Keeping that smirk firmly in place, Neelkan nods his head a little, his hair shifting around until it almost completely obscures one of his eyes. "I'm not goin' no where. E'en if 'ey kick m' outta the trainee program, I still got reasons t' stay." Learning to control his dreams being the main one of them. Where better to learn then from Aes Sedai? "'sides. I still gotta get m' earrin's back." He winks the eye that isn't obscured, obviously trying to show he isn't bothered by any of this. Now, don't be wrong. He is bothered. Seriously bothered. He wants to go curl up on his bed and -sleep- he's so bothered. And he never wants to sleep. But he won't let that show, and is hiding it behind a smirk and his playful wink and everything. He'll go into shock over all this later, when he's alone. Even if he has to go get a room in an inn for the night to do it. "I know yer just worried 'bout m', but.. but don't. We both got a lot t' worry 'bout it seems, right? So why not use each other as... I don't know..." An anchor would probably be a good word to use, but this is the guy who hates water. Thinking of a boat and a boat's anchor? No thanks. He'll pass. So he trails off at a loss for further words. He's still not good at this talking seriously part of conversation. Well, Espi's no fool and she knows you're probably hiding a great deal at the moment to put up a good front for her. To show her everything is just peachy keen. She knows otherwise though, but she won't tear down that facade you have. Sometimes it's easier to deal with things when you wear a mask. It's easier sometimes and keeps you from getting hurt alot of times too. She wears one right now as well and maybe if you look closely enough her eyes still flicker with that terrified novice of moments before. Right now though she simply nods her head in understanding. Of alot of things. She even helps with the words you are trying to think of, "Maybe...be the solid ground underneath? I..can't count the number of times that I've felt the ground under me feel like it's gone away, leaving me with nothing stable to stand on." She sighs softly, keeping her strong smile in place as she leans back. "I...know we all will do what we can. Each according to their gifts..and according to what we know." She shrugs her shoulders, hand reaching out to pat the hand still on her arm. "It's all we can hope...and all we can do really, right?" Stable ground? That sounds good. "Ye'h. Next time ya feel like yer gonna fall 'r somethin', just come lookin' f'r me, 'kay?" Neelkan continues to smirk, squeezing your arm a little again. "Well, 'long as ya don't plan t' -literally- stand on me. But ya can lean 'gainst m' if 'at's what ya need." He chuckles softly at his own small joke, and that helps keep his masked expression on. "I'll do what I can too. What I know. 'n what I know 'bove all else right now is 'at yer m' friend, 'n ya need m', e'en if all I can do is offer ya m' friendship, 'n all. Who knows, maybe 'en I learn how t'... do whate'er it is I can do with m'... talent... m'be I could help ya, more 'en just bein' yer friend..." Though he has no idea how... That isn't going to stop him from trying. Espiria smiles and pats the hand again, nodding several times. "That..is a welcomed thing to know, Neel and you'll never know how much I thank you for that. I..just wish that it could be under better conditions." She shakes her head, managing a chuckle. "Life sure throws curves doesn't it? When you least expect it? Some curves knock you flat..other lift you up, but you never know what they will do until after it's happened." She shakes her head, heaving a sigh for a moment before she finishes the last of her wrappings. And no, she's not going to ask you again how you knew. The time for that is past, especially after what she's said after that. If you ever want her to know, you'll tell her. Maybe one day when all of this is resolved? Or maybe before. She doesn't know, but she's willing to wait for the time when you feel so inclined to do so. After all, you were the one curious, right? You had to read the notebook? From where he's standing next to Espiria, Neelkan is still squeezing her arm slightly, before finally removing it. It doesn't lower though, and ends up going into his hair. That's something most people would expect. It's like the young man just can't stop scratching at his hair. As he does though he finally removes the fallen hair that's obscuring on of his eyes and pushes it out of the way, before adding, "Ye'h. 'at's one way 'a puttin' it! Not sure what I was expectin' t' happen, but... well... glad ya decided t' talk. 'n don't worry, I won't go around flapping my tongue." This is one thing that's being put into the category along with his dreams in the -NEVER- talk about unless -forced- side of things. Espiria smiles and nods, firm mask of happiness placed back over her worrying scowl. Can't have anyone knowing how upset she is. That wouldn't do at all. Nope. Would be worse than the lil' chat she and Neel just had. She chuckles softly, shrugging a shoulder. "I...I know you will do what you have to Neel and I always knew I could believe in that." She smiles, relief showing on her face from the other remark about it never being mentioned. "I knew that from the first time I saw you. Even if it was out cold in this cot of yours." She chuckles, slipping back into a more pleasant speaking tone. "Not that you were in any shape to protest when they took care of you." She giggles, ribbing Neel just a bit as she reaches over to pick up her small bundles. "I should probably get back to work. I have these done, but I still have sweeping downstairs to get done as well. I need to get that done before bedtime." "Um... ye'h. I'll let ya go do what ya need t' do." Neelkan offers a small smile, lowering his hand to his waist a little, "'n I'm gonna have t' go out f'r a bit m'self. If I'm gonna be a trainee I'm prolly gonna need more 'en two pairs of clothes. I got a few silvers left from what 'ey gave me, 'n I'll go out 'n get a few things." And a room where he can spend one night -alone- and think this all over. He's not going to even touch a drop of ale this time out either. Really... he won't! ... Or at least he doesn't plan to... That counts somewhat. "So I'll see ya later, a'right?" Espiria smiles and nods, her arms full of the bolt of fabric once more. She tips her head to one side, eyes growing just a tad sad. "Be well, Neel and may Light always guard you and keep you safe." She smiles again, turning to head for the door. Oh..she hopes you will be okay. She hopes you will be able to deal with what she's said. She still very angry with herself at having said what she did. You didn't need to hear that, but...the Wheel turns as it wills. It came out..and surely it must be for a reason. She passes thru the door and is gone from sight.
