| DUBUQUELAND has several locations of historic and cultural significance for German-Americans. Space does not permit for all of them to be listed here. For now, the list includes the following sections. -LOCATIONS IN THE CITY OF DUBUQUE AND/OR DUBUQUE COUNTY- EUROPA HAUS RESTAURANT and BIERSTUBE, 1301 Rhomberg Avenue, Dubuque (563) 588-0361 - for German beer and lunch and dinner menu of German food SAINT MARY CATHOLIC CHURCH, 15th and White Streets, Dubuque, succeeded the Holy Trinity Church that had been established for German-speaking Catholics. Saint Mary Catholic Church was the mother church to parishes later established and built by Germans in Dubuque: Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Holy Ghost Catholic Church, Holy Trinity Catholic Church. Also SAINT MARY CHURCH had responsibility for the early Catholic mission parishes at Sherrill's Mound (north of Dubuque) and Saint Catherine's (south of Dubuque) CREMER'S SUPERETTE, 731 Rhomberg Avenue, Dubuque (563) 583-6589 - for excellent homemade bratwurst BREITBACH's COUNTRY DINING in Balltown (563) 552-2220 - the oldest tavern and restaurant in Iowa, since 1852, offering a German-American menu in a scenic location settled by German-speaking people MOUNT CALVARY CEMETERY, 1111 Davis Avenue, Dubuque (563) 583-4329 - formerly called the German Catholic Cemetery and St. Mary's German Cemetery, it is the resting place of hundreds of German settlers, the central part of the cemetery is especially significant due to its age and appearance SAINT JOHN LUTHERAN CEMETERY, Davis Avenue, Dubuque - the burial ground for many early settlers who came from Wurttemberg and Mecklenburg in Germany THE GERMAN COMMERCIAL DISTRICT is basically the area on Central Avenue from Kauffmann Avenue south for several blocks. One part of this area that has many buildings intact stretches from 20th to 12th Streets on Central Avenue. HERITAGE HOUSE GERMAN MUSEUM, New Vienna, Iowa, is located in the former Convent of Saint Boniface Catholic Church parish. The Museum building, the Church, the cemetery, and other buildings are on the National Register of Historic Places.
