DUBUQUELAND - German Heritage
The 2000 Federal Census returns indicate that more than 50% of the population of  Dubuque County is of German, Austrian, or Swiss heritage. The Census did not include Luxembourg or Liechtenstein as choices, but Dubuque County is the home to thousands of people descended from Luxembourgish settlers (mostly speaking Letzebuergesch and German).

The links on this page provide  many resources for learning more about our German heritage. The Max Kade German-American Center in Indiana and the Society for German-American Studies include many pages and links on aspects of German-American life. The magazine "German Life" is a fine publication in English that offers a positive look at Germany and German-Americans. The writings of Sabine Barnhart (born in Germany) are delighful essays on life in a rural German setting that easily reminds one of places and aspects of German-American life in DUBUQUELAND in the 19th and 20th centuries.  The site "Luxembourg On My Mind" is a great starting point for exploring the heritage of Luxembourgish Dubuquelanders.

Use these links as tools for German American Heritage Month (15 September through 15 October). Celebrate, learn about, and preserve the German heritage of DUBUQUELANDERS.
