Study and Learn

Taking America's Measure - all about the metric system
1. PurpleMath's metric lesson - uses a different mnemonic sentence, but the same method I teach in class - even has the "scoopies!!"
Metric conversions tutorial powerpoint - - Click on the first PPT Slide link on the left and the show will start.  Some of the first slides go into a lot of extra detail, but click through those and you will get to the "how-to" part that is very similar to my method, except he uses a line instead of columns.
Metrics - go to the Metric System link to see lots of links on the topic.  Click on any that focus on the metric system (no "US" ones) and after you have studied the chart at the top, scroll down to see the practice part.  Watch your score!
2. Interactive Metric conversion practice - scroll down to the orange part of the page, then click start for the problems to appear.
3. Metric Units and Conversions - a quiz to test your "rule of thumb" understanding!
Science Lab Safety Rules - note all 8 major rules for lab safety!
General Science Safety Checklist - from Dupont
4. Experimental Science: An Introductory Guide   a simple overview that might help you understand the basics;  Advanced students and all students interested in doing a science fair project this year should read the Intermediate Level Guide (link is under the photo of the bicycle)
Notes on Scientific Method - from another teacher, but still great!
5. Biology4Kids: Scientific Method - great site for middle school kids that breaks ideas down and explains them well.  Read over this and when you get to the bottom, you can take a quiz to make sure you "get it!"
Variables - sometimes identifying the different kinds of variables is hard; this site explains each one briefly but simply.
Identify the Controls and Variables - this site uses The Simpsons' characters to give you practice thinking through experimental designs and identifying these elements.
Scientific Method - this is a short overview that should help you understand our class discussion
Understanding and using the Scientific Method - this one is a little longer, but it's easy to read and gives more good examples.
Steps of the Scientific Method - another short page you can read through in a couple of minutes.  Good overview/review.
The Savannah River Ecology Center shows you an application of the scientific method with this PowerPoint

The Scientific Method PowerPoint - mine from class, but it is missing the video clips - sorry!

Review and Practice
Practice with the terms of the Scientific Method - a game
Order these metric measurements - it's harder than it looks!
Play this
Basketball Game to see if you know the Scientific Method!
Play this
Rags to Riches game to check your knowledge of the metric system.
Hangman on Scientific Method - some of this is tough, since it uses different steps, but it's a great challenge!  And don't forget to watch your hangman!!!
Here's a
Battleship game that has questions straight from the Prentice Hall test!  Play it many times!!
I made this
hangman game to go with the test from the Holt Pilot book last year.  It's still good practice for you, since the content is the same even though all the questions aren't identical.
These are the same as the posters in my room, but these  aren't in order.  Make sure you know the correct order of the process!
