in november lara's mother treated us to a trip to mexico. this was
for two reasons.
the first reason was that it was the wedding of one of lara's mother's
homestay women/friends.
secondly this trip was to be a christmas gift for lara and myself.
so far so good, a paid trip to a foriegn country, and all i had to do
was sit through a lousy wedding.
the flight down to mexico was pretty uneventful, except for the turbulence.
luckily the attendants had already served dinner and i had taken my
pills to prevent motion sickness. i got to watch 'i robot' on the plane
and fell asleep about a minute into the 'bourne supremacy'. man that
movie sucked.
when we arrived in mexico we actually got through customs rather quickly.
i was then promptly stopped by a girl who then gave me a questionare
about the service i had recieved. i think this was also the first instance
of my answering the question 'do you speak english?' with the response,
'si'. we were greeted at the airport by carmen and . carmen is aparently
mexico's wort driver, and caused an accident be hind us less than two
minutes after picking us up. the sad part of this is, she still drives
better than a large number of the people in vancouver that have been
issued licenses.
the next day and a bit we spent touring around mexico city before we
headed out to acapulco. which under most circumstances would be a three
hour or less drive. with carmen however this turned out to be a trip
of over four hours. the exciting part of the drive out was being jolted
awake by the sound of our mirror smashing into a road construction sign.
acapulco is a tourist trap. don't ever go there if you want to 'see
mexico', however i've head it's not as bad as other tourist resort towns
along the coast.
while in acapulco i was almost drowned, i lost my glasses to the sea,
i was rendered quite ill (and consequently missed the wedding), and
spent most of my time sitting around watching television. as a bit of
a plus however, sponge bob is just as good (if not better) in spanish.
upon our return to mexico city, lara and i got to see a few mayan cities,
pyramids and other ruins as well as the anthroplogical museum. each
excursion should be given at least one day to take in completely, and
the museum should be given at least three days to fully complete.
it was at the museum that i again answered the question of 'do you speak
english?' with, 'si'.
unfortunately due to the nature of the group lara and i were stuck in
we spent more time looking at lousy jewlery, wasting time on the beach
and worrying about being late for dinner rather than checking out the
things we wanted to see. but it was a free trip so i cna't really complain.
luckily i did meet all of my requirements for the trip being successful.
which were: seeing a pyramid, listening to a mariachi band and finding
mexican wrestling masks. actually the mariachi band wasn't on my two
manditory qualifiers for a good time, it was more of a bonus.
i spent the second last day getting rushed around teotihacan and getting
burnt, and then seeing the mariachi band at a very expensive restaraunt.
then the very last day we spent in metapec with carmen's family who
are all very interesting people in thier own right. also metapec is
well know for ufo sightings.
the flight home was less eventful than the flight down. we got to watch
'the terminal' and 'the boring supremacy' again, this time i think it
took me halsf the time to fall asleep.
we arrived back in vancouver to some rather cold weather.
all in all not a bad trip.
