my birthday made me feel old.
lara gave me a pair of sunglasses, the same frames that my regular glasses
came from. i also went out for sushi with two of the guys i work with.
yeah.
in a slightly more interesting bit of news, i went to see the band lungfish
with craig and his sister. we met up with gerry loughran at the show
as well as some of craig's sister's friends. as far as show go this
had to be one of the best that i have ever experienced (i say expereinced
because there were things happening on levels that i couldn't even begin
to understand). this show had to be either one of the best performances
by a band that i have ever seen; either that or one of the biggest shams
that i've ever been had by.
the opening bands were rather unremarkable wuss rock type bands, not
really all that interesting or original. however when lungfish took
the stage that all seemed rather inconsequential (actually anything
would after lungfish's performance). until this point i don't think
that i've ever heard anyone play the jews harp live, and not only that
but in such a way that it could have been an entire performace unto
itself. after five to ten minutes of the jews harp it just got more
bizzare from there. the members of lungfish began to play thier instruments
just as you would expect at any other standard rock oriented show. however
one thing that you rapidly would have noticed at this show was that
the lead singer wasn't singing but rather stumbling and jerking around
stage as if years of drug abuse or insanity had been the normal state
of his life.
i should also note that lungfish's lead singer looks like a stereotypical
homeless crazy guy, the type who would make random jerky psuedo-dancelike
movements under even normal circumstances. as a matter of fact on the
way into the bar i did momentarily mistake him for a homeless person,
crumpled up old suit jacket, thinning hair covered by an old well worn
touque, long scragily beard, rumpled jeans and weathered leather boots.
to continue on with my story; the music continued on, song after song,
after song. this continued for quite sometime, all the while you would
have been thinking "ok next song he's gotting to sing". finally at one
point the band stopped, and the crazed homeless looking singer mumbled
something about feeling good about people in vancouver or something
to that extent. at this point the band started again, this time vocals
included. they played a few songs in this fashion and then, that was
it. the band left the stage and was gone. craig and i sat there for
a while not quite knowing what to make of the experience. we knew we
had either just witnessed greatness or had the wool pulled over our
eyes, royally. either way we both agreed that it was a pretty damn entertaining
show.
lara's birthday was also this month. due to every fault of my own it
was even more uneventful than my own birhtday.
in more important news (bmx related) i purchased three new frames. two
mosh steel frames and one aluminum race frame. one i'll probably end
up selling to jeff and hopefully i'll end up making the race frame into
a super-light dirt jumper. the dirt jumper would come in handy due to
the fact that rob and i (among others) have been building and riding
a set of dirt jumps not far from our apartment(s). i even went so far
as to buy some tiki torches so that we can ride at night. which we have
already tried out to much success. |
