32. Hiram CROCKER was born Jan 13 1830 in New York. He died Jun 8 1872 in Romulus Township (Wayne Co.), Michigan and was buried in Romulus City Cemetery (Wayne Co.), Michigan. Hiram married Clarrissa FISH before Oct 1855 in Unknown.

Hiram served in the military during the U.S. Civil War (1st Michigan Regiment, Light Artillery Battery B) Sep 9 1862 - Jun 14 1865 in Romulus, Michigan. [Parents]

Birth
There is very little known about Hiram Crocker's place of birth, except that he was born somewhere in the state of New York.  Most likely, he was born in or near the place in which his parents were married, Pittsford, Monroe Co., New York.  Research is underway to find vital records from the state of New York.

Biography
Hiram Crocker migrated to Michigan from New York with his parents (William and Ursula) sometime prior to 1840.  William Crocker settled his family in the northern part of Romulus Township (Wayne Co.) Michigan on a plot of land that they began farming.
By 6 Jul 1860, Hiram had married Clarissa and had 3 children; Ursula E., Loretta Mary, and Delbert Hiram.  The census records of that year show Hiram and his family living on or near the land that William purchased prior to 1840 in Romulus Township (Wayne Co.), Michigan.  Hiram Crocker's property is listed as being worth $500 and his personal estate is listed as being worth $200.
On 31 Jan 1862, Hiram's wife Clarissa passed away due to unknown causes.  She was buried at the Romulus City Cemetery.
Hiram Crocker enlisted as a Private in the Union of the 1st Michigan Regiment Light Artillery Battery B on September 9, 1862 in Detroit, Michigan at the age of 32 and was sworn in by Lieut. C. W. Laing.  He was promoted to Artillery Artificer on April 1, 1864.  He was mustered out on June 14, 1865 in Detroit, Michigan when his regiment completed its duty at the end of the American Civil War.  The batteries battle flag is shown to the left.  To the right, the insignia of an Artillery soldier, usually worn on their cap.  According to his enlistment papers, Hiram was 5 ft. 10 in. tall with gray/hazel eyes, dark/black hair, and had a dark complexion.
Artificers were specialists who were paid an additional rate ($15 per month starting in 1861).  In winter camps and during lulls in active campaigning they broke out their tools from the battery wagon and forge and went to work.  The artificer was primarily a blacksmith - he repaired the wood and iron parts of the battery carriages.  Most artillery batteries had only one man assigned this duty.  They received their instructions from the first sergeant and traveled in the rear of the battery near their tools.
The image to the left identifies the insignia that an Artificer would where on their uniform.  The image to the right is that of the dress uniform of an artillery Corporal.  However, very few Civil War soldiers were ever issued this distinguished uniform, due to its expense.
Refer to additional excerpt for a history of the 1st Michigan Light Artillery Battery B.

After he was mustered out of the Army in 1865, all indications are that Hiram returned home to Romulus.  On 10 Jun 1870, he is shown as living in the household of his father, William, along with his children (according to census records of that year).

Following is Hiram Crocker's signature, as signed on his enlistment papers on September 9, 1862.

Death & Burial

36. Gilbert Walter WOOSTER was born calculated 1831 in Newbury (Geauga Co.), Ohio. He died Nov 8 1887 in Burr Oak (St. Joseph Co.), Michigan from gradual debility brought on by chronic diarrhea and fistula and was buried in Burr Oak Cemetery (St. Joseph Co.), Michigan. Gilbert married Mary Ann WALTERS on Jan 28 1863 in Pittsford (Hillsdale Co.), Michigan.

Gilbert served in the military during the U.S. Civil War (5th Michigan Regiment, Infintry Company A) Aug 27 1861 - Oct 16 1862 in Detroit, Michigan. He served in the military 1 during the U.S. Civil War (4th Michigan Regiment, Reorganized Infintry Company G) Sep 26 1864 - Mar 5 1866 in Commerce, Michigan.

BIRTH:
Gilbert W. Wooster was born in Newbury (Geauga Co.), Ohio in 1831.

BIOGRAPHY:
Little is known of Gilbert Wooster's life between the time of his birth and the age of about 24.
About 1855, Gilbert Wooster settled in Milford (Oakland Co.), Michigan, and began working as a farm laborer.  It is unknown what brought him to Michigan from Ohio.  Since no records of his parents have been found, it is possible that he made his way to Michigan as an adult.  Research is underway to better clarify this aspect of his life.

BIOGRAPHY: Gilbert Wooster enlisted as a Private in the Union of the 5th Michigan Regiment Infantry Company A on August 27, 1861 at Fort Wayne in Detroit, Michigan at the age of 29.

BIOGRAPHY: On 5 May 1862, Gilbert was wounded in the battle at Williamsburg, Virginia, with a gunshot wound (musket ball) on the scalp and a gunshot wound (buck shot) to the left side of his abdomen between the hip joint and lowest rib.  He was initially treated at the field hospital until transferred to the U.S. National Hospital (Camden Station) at Baltimore Maryland on 10 May 1862.  On 8 July 1862 he was returned to active duty, but never returned to the field due to his injuries.  Gilbert was sent to the Convalescent Hospital at Fort McHenry, Maryland on 9 July 1862, where he remained until his discharge on October 16, 1862.  At the time of his discharge, Gilbert was 5 ft. 91/2 in. tall, with blue eyes, brown hair, and a light complexion.

BIOGRAPHY: Within a few weeks of his discharge, Gilbert returned to Michigan, settling this time in White Lake (Oakland Co.), where he remained for only a few weeks.  He then moved to Pittsford (Hillsdale Co.), Michigan, in the fall of 1862.  This is where he met his wife, Mary Ann Walters, and they were married on 28 Jan 1863 by the local Justice of the Peace, Thomas W. Lee.  Gilbert and Mary remained in Pittsford until approximately November of 1863, when they moved back to White Lake, Michigan, remaining there until approximately 1872.
On 26 Sep 1864, Gilbert again enlisted in the Army as a volunteer, this time in the 4th Michigan Regiment Infantry Company G, a re-organized unit made up primarily of veterans, in Commerce (Oakland Co.), Michigan, at the age of 32.  The evidence from official War Department correspondence obtained as part of his pension file paints an interesting picture of Gilbert's second tour of duty in the Civil War.  On 21 Oct 1864, he deserted in Adrian Michigan and remained absent without leave (AWOL) until 11 Nov 1864, when he was arrested in Jefferson Township (Hillsdale Co.) Michigan under the charge of desertion, for which there was a $30 reward given.  He was delivered to the military commander in Detroit the same day, but by this time the 4th Michigan Company G had marched south to meet up with other military units engaged in battle.  On 23 Nov 1864 he was delivered to Barracks #1 at Louisville, Kentucky, then transferred to Nashville, Tennessee on 25 Nov 1864.  On 26 Dec 1864, Gilbert rejoined Company G and was restored to duty by Major General Wood.  He was never tried for the charge of desertion, but it did remain on his official service record and his wages were garnished by $30 in both April and June of 1865 ($60 total).  A letter written to the Pension Commissioner by the Captain and Assistant Surgeon of the U.S. Army dated 29 Apr 1890 states the following.

BIOGRAPHY: "The charge of desertion as of October 1864 no longer stands against him … cannot however be expunged from his record."
On 11 Feb 1866, Gilbert received what would be his final payment of $96.  On 6 Mar 1866, Gilbert deserted again while his unit was in San Antonio, Texas, and was officially dropped from enlistment and the units muster roll on 31 Mar 1866 by Colonel Jairus W. Hall.  Within a few weeks, Gilbert returned to Jefferson Township (Hillsdale Co.) Michigan, where he was again arrested on the charge of desertion, but released the same day.  Shortly thereafter, Gilbert returned to his family in White Lake (Oakland Co.), Michigan.

BIOGRAPHY: In a War Department (Record & Pension Division) letter dated 24 Oct 1890 and signed by an authority of the Secretary of War, Gilbert was officially cleared of the second desertion charge and granted an official discharge for this second enlistment.

BIOGRAPHY: "The charge of desertion of March 6, 1866 against this soldier has been removed under provisions of an act of Congress approved March 2, 1889 and he has been discharged as of that date."

BIOGRAPHY: It is unclear what motivated Gilbert to re-enlist a second time, given the wounds he suffered at the battle of Williamsburg and their debilitating affects afterwards.  It is also unclear what drove him desert his obligated duties twice over the course of 18 months.  Most likely, these questions will never be answered.

BIOGRAPHY: In 1872, Gilbert moved his family back to Jefferson Township (Hillsdale Co.), Michigan.  By this time, Gilbert was suffering from numerous health problems related to the wounds received at the battle of Williamsburg.  Although his personal testimony differs slightly from the doctors that examined him, it is clear that he still had buck shot in his abdomen causing chronic diarrhea, Fistula, etc.  It is also evident that he battled epilepsy as a result of the gunshot wound to the head.  In 1875, Gilbert was admitted to the Hillsdale County Hospital in an attempt to correct the debilitations.  The operation was unsuccessful, however, and may have contributed to the worsening of his condition, according to doctors that examined in him in 1881, 1883, and 1886.

BIOGRAPHY: In 1876, Gilbert moved his family to Sherwood (Branch Co.), Michigan, where they remained for approximately one year.  In 1877, they again moved to Nottawa (St. Joseph Co.) Michigan.
In 1879, Gilbert moved his family one final time to Burr Oak (St. Joseph Co.), Michigan, where the family remained until 1890.
On 8 Nov 1887, Gilbert W. Wooster passed away of gradual debility brought on by his poor health condition resulting from the injuries he received.

BURIAL:
Gilbert W. Wooster was laid to rest in Burr Oak (St. Joseph Co.) Michigan.  Attending the funeral, in addition to his family, was James C. Bishop.  Mr. Bishop was supervisor of the town of Burr Oak and had known the family since their arrival there in 1879.  Mr. Bishop was a Pall Bearer at Gilbert's funeral and continued checking on Gilbert's family after his death, until the family moved again in 1890.
