Origin of the Bullard Surname
The surname has a few possible meanings here are the ones I have found to date:

1. 'Having the disposition of a bull.' Source - An Etymological Dictionary of Family and Christain Names on their Derivation and Import, Arthur William, 1857.

2. 'Most probably from
bullward, an occpational name for someone who looked after a bull.' Source - Answers.com

3. 'Occupational name for a scribe, derived from middle English
bulle "letter."' Source - Behind the Name. I have read else where that it has French origins as well.

4. 'The name Bullard is Anglo-Saxon in origin. It was a name given to a person who worked as a bull herder or keeper of cattle.' Source - The House of Names.

5. Adrian Ballard informed me that in 'Guppy's Home of British Surnames' the name was derived from Balliol. Whether this has anything to do with the French Kings of Scotland we will have to wait and see! Furthermore, Adrian sent me the following reference - '"Billlard" descended from "Balihoil" (sic) Kings of Scotland (Julien and Sir Reader)
extracted from: "Changing Anotomy Of Britain" by Anthony Simpson.'
