3. DENNIS3 CANFIELD I (*AMON2, DAVID1) was born May 20, 1768 in NY/CT (probably Dutchess Co., NY), and died May 29, 1846 in Hamburg, Erie Co., NY. He married (1) POLLY LOBDELL, daughter of JARED LOBDELL and ELIZABETH SIGNOR. She died July 1792 in Danby, Rutland, VT. He married (2) RUTH BULL MCDANIELS. She was born 1763, and died 1846. He married (3) POLLY MIX/WALTON June 05, 1825 in Danby, VT.

Notes for DENNIS CANFIELD:
Dennis Canfield was a private, New York Continental Line, in the Revolutionary War. Dennis enlisted in May, 1780, and served under Capt. Cornelius T. Jansen in the New York Regiment commanded by Colonel Greenwood. That Regiment was shortly joined with the First Regiment under the same Captain and comanded by Colonel Van Schnik and Lt. Colonel Van Dyke. He was at the Battle of Yorktown and saw General Cornwallis had his sword to George Washington.

Dennis received an honorable discharge at the close of the war at Snake Hill, near Newburgh. He then delivered his discharge papers to George Frelich, Esq. then liveing in Dutchess Co., NY, at Nine Partners, to secure his wages.

Dennis was pensioned under the Act of Congress passed on March 18, 1818, placed on the Pension Rolls on September 18, 1818, Commission to pay on April 13, 1818 and received a total of $1,525.83. This is from the US Pension Department Records.

Dennis was made a Freeman in Danby, VT in 1800 along with Crispin Bull, Timothy Bull Jr., Darius Lobdell, Job King, and Roswell Dart. In 1795, in a Town Meeting, Dennis was elected a Hayward.

Dennis built a house on the lake road running from Hamburg to Lake Erie.

Ruth Bull's family were Quakers. Ruth had a son, Nathan, who was 23 yrs. in 1820, not known if this is Dennis Canfield's son or Ruth Bull McDaniels by a different marriage.

Notes for POLLY MIX/WALTON:
Polly was reportedly a Native American, no idea from what tribe. She applied for a pension on May 24, 1853, while 67 years old and a resident of Hamburg, NY. Polly died in a fire in the house she and Dennis had lived in reportedly while smoking her pipe.
