A'kel and Moriath
Moriath warbled as A'kel stumbled up the stairs.
Watch it.  You are drunk again. The light green dragon warned her rider, who shook his head and shrugged.
"Hardly likely dear.  I've merely had one over the limit...."  A'kel hiccuped then, and sighed as he entered his weyr.  He put his hand on the stone doorway to steady himself for a minute before tripping over to his bed and falling in.  "Perhaps you are right love, perhaps I am a little drunk..."  A'kel was rewarded with Moriath's sympathetic croon and the sound of her rustling to put her head into his quarters.  They were big quarters, and she was a small dragon, her head fit quite nicely.
Why do you do that every night after Thread? She questioned him, resting her head on the floor.  It's not good for you to be drunk.  The Weyrwoman thinks it's starting to cause a problem, and I don't want you to cause problems!

Ah love, don't worry about it. But A'kel groaned as the room began to spin. It's not a problem, all the riders over indulge on Threadfall days.  It's celebrating, love.
No. Moriath said firmly, and shrunk back into the weyr. It is not about Thread, you are still upset you did not Impress a male dragon. And Moriath's hurt tone stung A'kel, who tried to hide his true feelings.
"No Moriath, no I'm not.  I love you Mor, I wouldn't trade you for all the bronzes in the Weyr."  A'kel rememebered the feelings of Impression, the joy, the happiness, the love, and the slight nagging feeling that he had Impressed green.  On the day of Impression it hadn't mattered much, he had loved the tiny green dragonet that had chosen him.  She was so beautiful, so smart, and she would grow to be 'just his size'.
A'kel smiled through his drunkeness at the memory.  How perfect that had been.  And Yasa had Impressed too....Not that he thought about Yasa much anymore.  But it was the next day, as he took Moriath to be fed, that he realized just what Impressing a green meant.  She would want to fly, and she would want to be flown by a male....A'kel had stopped on this one, and without meaning to he'd wailed in his mind,
Why couldn't I have Impressed a blue?
Moriath had heard that, stopped short, and begun to cry loudly.  She told A'kel she would dissappear between if he didn't want her, she would die.  What was the matter with her, to not be wanted like all her other clutch mates?  She was the only one whose rider even thought that he'd rather have another dragon.  It had taken A'kel days to reassure Moriath that he didn't mean he didn't want her, he loved her.  It was stress and confusion that made him say that.  Luckily Moriath believed him.    But the nagging feeling stayed with A'kel, what did it mean that a green had wanted him?  What would it mean when she flew?
A'kel never considererd men, but for that sakes he never considered women either.  And what did that mean?  If he didn't like either....or did he like both?  He didn't know.  He was ready to comfort Moriath and was surprised to find the dragon's mind in a state of absolute calm.  A'kel was worried despite himself.
Moriath? He asked her, and he felt her presence flowing back.  But she didn't say anything.  Moriath wasn't the silent angry type, and this made A'kel even more nervous.  Maybe he was imagining things?  It had been bad wine...That was it.
No.  The wine wasn't bad. Moriath said, still calm, but not at all gentle.  A'kel winced at the sharp tone in her voice.
"Morry, I'm sorry.  I didn't mean what I said then, and I don't mean it now either!"  A'kel whispered out loud, his head beginning to hurt.  He'd get up and go to his dragon, but he didn't dare stand up.
  Y
ou maybe don't want all the bronzes, but you certainly don't want a green! Moriath snorted at him, and he could feel the anger rising in her voice.  If something bothers you, tell me about it A'kel!  I'm here for you, and I can help! Moriath pleaded with him, and A'kel felt guilty at once.  So that's what was bothering her!  She knew he was keeping things from her.
"Alright love, we'll talk, just give me time to sleep...."  A'kel yawned and felt Moriath's presence lulling him into slumber.  They would talk when he got up.

Three days later...
A'kel was busy rubbing oil into Moriath's hide when he saw a figure sitting out in the Weyrbowl.  It was much too early        for even the drudges to be up, and A'kel wasn't used to seeing anyone else at this time of day.  He himself always got               up this early, unless he woke up with a hangover, in which case he slept later.

Mory?  Who is that? A'kel asked his light green dragon, who replied nonchalantly.
That is the Searchrider.
"W'ryn?"  A'kel asked, surprised.  He knew for  a fact that W'ryn had left two days ago on Search, and hadn't returned yet.  Or wasn't suppose to at least, for another sevenday.  Perhaps he was just dropping a Candidate off?  It might have been a decent hour where the new Candidate came from.  But he didn't see Sylth up on the heights.  Moriath yawned lazily.
It is the female Searchrider.  Her blue is still asleep, he does not wake as early as we do. A'kel caught a strange note in Moriath's voice, but he didn't ask her about it.  It might very well be she disliked the blue, what was his name?, Rainelth.  That was it.  Denne and Rainelth.
I don't think I've ever really talked to Denne. A'kel thought, partly to himself, partly to his dragon.  She's always with that Healer weyrmate of hers Nallion. A'kel thought the man was insufferable, but he was a decent Healer.
But as A'kel finished oiling Moriath, and told her she could go eat, he noticed Denne wasn't moving much.  She was just sitting there, under a tree, hunched over.  She almost looked like she was crying.

Searchriders have hard lives. Moriath replied insensitively, and lept into the air to the nearby holding pens.  The Weyrleaders found it best to keep a days worth of dragonfood in the Weyrbowl itself, so if a dragon was rising no hungry others could bother the flight.  A'kel could very easily see his hungry Moriath swinging into the pens and catching herself a fat buck.  He didn't like to watch her eat, so he didn't mind not being closer.  Maybe he should go see that Denne...

Do as you like. Moriath's mind voice came gently, but be careful.  She doesn't know you, and is not trusting.
How do you know this?  I thought you didn't like her.
I never said that. Moriath chided gently, and went back to ripping at her kill.  A'kel rolled his eyes, and decided to go see why the woman was out here at this time of day.  He almost grabbed the pre-dawn twighlight possessively, and was ready to chase her away if she thought she thought he was willing to share.
Great Faranth. Moriath exclaimed at him. You are immpossible. But he felt the lovingness in her voice, and sent the same feeling back.  He had done as he'd promised, and talked to her two days ago.  She was still upset with him on account as he kept things hidden from her, and he was still confused about Impressing a green.  But they'd get over it, eventually.
"Erm, hello?"  A'kel asked her, as he approached.  She jerked her head up, looking startled. Her face was roundish and firm.  It was obvious she wouldn't have been a very lovely child, but now.... She's beautiful.  A'kel thought.  In a mysterious sort of way.  Her hair was cut shoulder length, but it was thick and dark and wild.  Her eyes flashed hazel, and she was very muscular too.  A'kel liked that in her.  He himself used to be scrawny before weyrlife toughened him up, and he could tell she was the same way.  She was also feminine looking, with rounded hips and breasts.
Stop it wherry. A'kel told himself.  You shouldn't be thinking like that.  Her looks aren't for you to judge, although they are very nice.
"Hello."  The woman answered, her eyes flashed and were watery.  It was obvious she'd been keeping herself from crying.  A'kel smiled at that.  He liked that strength in her as well.

So tell her! Moriath yelled at him as she went for her third herdbeast.  She was small, so she would eat more.

I can't tell her I think she's pretty.  I'm not fifteen!

You're nearly twenty, and that's close enough. Moriath replied thoughtfully. Besides, I think she'd like it if you took a more direct approach.
I'm not approaching her at all Mory.  I'm seeing why she's here.
Riigghhtt. Moriath said, mimicking one of A'kel's favourite sarcastic remarks.  He heard the green snort with amusement, and felt her pushing him towards the woman.
"Are you alright?"  A'kel blurted out, hoping he didn't sound too immature.  The woman raised an eyebrow at him, and shrugged.
"I suppose so."  It was obvious she didn't want to divulge information, and although A'kel was curious, he didn't want to pry for it.  He didn't want to seem too interested, although he was.
"Ah."  He said, trying to look older than he felt.  Denne could be anywhere from sixteen to thirty, and was still very attractive.  A'kel knew he looked exactly his age, and was handsome, but not gorgeous.  He knew Nallian to be one of the best looking men in the Weyr, and wondered if Denne would consider....

Be firm with her. A voice, obviously dragonic, but not Moriath's, said in A'kel's mind. Be honest, and be yourself.  She will show you what she feels then.  She is most unsure right now....and it is not good for you to hide.  She needs a friend, a human one...

Get out of A'kel's mind! Moriath shouted at the invading dragon, letting A'kel know she was protecting him. He is my rider, and I will not have you, Rainelth, telling him what to do!  That's my job!

Maybe you should do your job a bit better than. Rainelth snapped back, letting A'kel hear him.  Because he wasn't doing anything right before, maybe he will now! A'kel was certain they were still yelling at each other, for her could hear Moriath's warbling from the pens, but he didn't personally hear the rest of the arguement.  He was glad Moriath remembered it was still morning, and she couldn't make much noise.  Usually when something angered Moriath, anyone within a mile's distance was sure to hear about it.  A'kel grinned and relaxed.  If Denne's blue had spoken to him, read his intentions, and not minded, perhaps Denne wouldn't either.
"Love trouble?" He asked her gently, and Denne stared at him ruefully.
"You'd like to know?  A greenrider?"   Her voice was rich and reminded him of a dragon's croon.  He liked it.
"That, er, doesn't necessarily represent my own prefrences."  A'kel told her, standing firm and not flinching away.  She seemed enthralled by that, for whatever reason, and smiled at him.
"That's unusual.  I've never seen a, er, straightforward greenrider male before."  And she stood up.  A'kel offered her his hand, and she took it.  At full height, the top of her head reached his eyes.  A'kel couldn't believe how perfect they seemed to go together, their bodies anyway.  Hopefully their minds matched too.  "Thanks."  And Denne flashed him a grin, showing a row of sparkling white teeth.  A'kel could have kissed her.

Snap out of it. Moriath growled.  If you like her, then kiss her, don't think about it.  All this romance is making me sick! And it was obvious Moriath was thinking about her arguement with Rainelth.  A'kel shook his head momentarily, and looked down at Denne.  The girl was obviously conversing with her dragon as he conversed with his.  Well, maybe he should......No, he couldn't get his hopes up.  He was a greenrider, and he must act a greenrider.  It wasn't possible that he liked women, even if he thought he did.  Somewhere deep inside, he must like men.  Even if he didn't believe it himself.  He nodded curtly to Denne, getting her attention.
"Well, it's been nice meeting you.  I've got to go."  And he walked bruskly away.  Denne stared after him, confused.  She had just been starting to get interested in this handsome greenrider, up so early so unique.  And he was a greenrider....Without really being aware of it, all dragonriders evaluated their relationships based on their dragons sex and flight requirements.  Rainelth was blue, so he could only chase greens.  All greenriders were either women or homosexual men, which meant that making arrangements was, to say the least, difficult for both riders involved if everything didn't match up properly.
But this man was a straight greenrider, so when his gree flew, Rainelth could catch her, and then...Denne blushed like a Holder girl of twelve at the thought, and smiled through the redness.  How foolish she was!  He obvioulsy had no interest in her.  And she had just ended her time with Nallian.  The man was really getting to be too pigheaded for her own liking.  He thought her off on Searches was an excuse to bed as many women as he liked.  And this stranger didn't even seem to like her.
Of course he does! Rainelth snorted.  How could he not like you?  He is afraid I think, and his green is proddy.  She is bothering him. Denne smiled at her blue's mind voice, and remembered how sweet, and startling, Impression had been for her.  She loved Rainelth with all her being.

What's his green's name?  What's his name? Denne realized that the man had forgotten to mention it to her, or purposely hadn't mentioned it.  Of course, he may have been too tired.  Denne didn't know why he was out bathing his dragon so early, but it seemed odd to her.  She herself had been up all night, fighting with Nallian about their inevitable end, and had snuck out early in the morning to be alone.  She hadn't expected to meet anyone.

Moriath. Rainelth said, almost dreamily.
So he's...

A'kel. Rainelth said again, and Denne could almost hear him shrugging.  Denne smiled.
So you like him then?  You haven't even met him.
I am a Search dragon. Rainelth said proudly. I can easily tell how people are, and whether I like them.  You'll be glad to learn that I also have found a Search worthy Candidate in the Lower Caverns in my sleep!

If you mean the young drudge who woke you up while cleaning, she was already being asked to stand for the clutch.  She's too intelligant to be a drudge.  Rainelth sent an arrogant thought to her, and Denne laughed.  I suppose I'd better go find A'kel and tell him his greens proddy.  He didn't seem to be aware of it, and if it's her first time.

And I will catch her for you.  Rainelth put in.  Even though her attitude it atrocious and uncivilized.  I know you like him, and I will catch her.

You're already signed up for a flight love, at Dark Moon.  Remember Camoreth?
Of course.  She will rise first, and I will give chase.  If I catch her, that will be the end of it.  If I catch Moriath later, that will be the beginning.
