"Tal?" C'rel, formerly Cerrel, but now a greenrider and T'rav's, formerly Talarev's, "weyrmate" whispered as the pair sat out watching their hatchlings splashing about in the shallows of the Sidra's Weyrlake. T'rav (who insisted his rider name sounded silly somehow) smiled up at C'rel and blinked.
"Yes Crel?" T'rav never used the dragonriders honorifics with Cerrel. He called him "Crel" out of love, not out of respect for his mate's job.
Fine thing to call it! A voice said in T'rav's mind. A job! T'rav heard his blue Bandometh snorting with teasing disgust from the water. T'rav smiled indulgantly at his new life partner. He was still amazed he had Impressed. This had been Cerrel's thing, not his. He'd expected his "mate" to Impress, no problems, but when he stepped out onto the hatching grounds he'd known, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that this was suddenly about him too. Then he'd Impressed Bandometh, and he was still trying to decide if meeting Cerrel, or meeting this tiny blue dragonet, had been the most important moment of his short life.
As if it's any sort of decision. Bandometh teased, and waddled up towards his rider, the green Histesth hot on his heels. The green followed her clutch mate everywhere; which was well enough that they got along, because C'rel and T'rav went everywhere together too. As blue and greenriders they weren't obligated to take the extra "leader" courses of the bronze, brown, and goldriders. Both of them were glad for this.
"Where do you suppose we'll go when our little hatchlings have all grown up?" T'rav watched as Histesth snuggled her slight body up against C'rel, and watched as he wrinkled his nose and stroked her back. T'rav smiled at the endearing picture, and turned to see Bandometh sitting right in front of him, staring him in the eye. T'rav almost fell backward, catching himself in time. He wasn't used to this kind of light hearted, almost game, in life. He was used to walking about with some dignity.
What's dignity to a mere bluerider? Bandometh asked, and T'rav looked at him in shock.Who said that?
I did. Bandometh whined, and T'rav rolled his eyes.
I know that Bandometh. I meant where did you hear "lowly bluerider" from? T'rav didn't really care that much, but he didn't want things getting around to Crel, who did care how people viewed him and his.
One of the visiting bronzes said it. I don't remember which one. Bandometh gave his rider a mental shrug, and flopped down on the cool grass. T'rav frowned sourly and turned back to Cerrel.
"What do you mean where we'll go? I always thought you were supposed to stay in the same Weyr where you Impressed. Surely Sidra's not such a bad place?" T'rav saw the faraway look on his lover's face, and smiled gently. "Look at me Crel." Cerrel obeyed, and T'rav took C'rel's hands in his own and stared intently into C'rel's beautiful blue eyes. "I'll go wherever you want to go. One place is as good as another to me. Look what happened to me the first time, I got Bandometh the first time I followed you. Don't ever think I won't be perfectly happy wherever we go together." T'rav knew this sounded horrible; and he knew it wasn't completely true. C'rel knew it too, but the simpler lad smiled because, unlike T'rav who wouldn't appreciate such a bad overture of affection, he did.
"Love life?" T'rav offered and scowled. He knew exactly what Cerrel was talking about. It's not like back in their "home time", when people were either acceptant or not of the homosexual lifestyle. Here, they all seemed a little wary of it; but seemed to force themselve to accept it and even find some sort of perverse pleasure in seeing too men together. T'rav shuddered.
"Yeah." C'rel said, and hugged the squirming Histesth tight. The green cried out hungrily, and began creeling.
I'm hungry C'rel! She whined, and T'rav laughed. He could always hear Histesth, and he found her childish antics amusing. C'rel, on the other hand, could rarely hear Bandometh. C'rel didn't seem bothered by it in the slightest though, and T'rav was glad for it.
You really are too fond of her Bandometh stated dryly, and T'rav sighed.
What makes you say that? You like her too; and she you. Remember blue, T'rav said fondly, you'll have to fly her one day. And T'rav smiled secretly to himself in anticipation. He was never a very physical person, until Cerrel came along.
A few minutes later the foursome left to go feed hungry mouths and discuss the future.
