California U. S. Highways in 1963

On July 1, 1964, a major renumbering of the California State Highway System occurred which resulted in the disappearance and shortening of most U. S. highways and the first appearance of interstate route numbers. The descriptions of U. S. highways below were taken from a 1963 California State Highway Map issued by the California State Department of Public Works, Division of Highways. This map provides the latest routing that I have found of the U. S. highways before the renumbering.

Of course, earlier routings of these highways existed, especially in cities. For example, Auburn Blvd. in Sacramento County was once US-40 and Ventura Blvd. in Los Angeles was once US-101. And, at least one U. S. highway had previously been renumbered in California. From a circa 1922 map, the portion of US-50 from San Francisco to Stockton (now portions of I-80, I-580, I-5, and SR-4) was named US-48. On this old map, US-50 ended in Sacramento at US-99.

The descriptions below are not official and may contain errors due to inaccurate map reading or an inaccurate map itself. The route listing is followed by a list of modern state highways that follow the same route or parallel it. (Abbreviations: ALT - Alternate, BYP - Bypass, I - Interstate, SR - State Route, and US - U. S. Route)
