--- Physical Description ---

Terran Imperium humans resemble the humans of 21st Century Earth in every way.

--- History ---

Terra started out pretty much the way liberal visionaries of the mid 20th Century thought it would. Fusion technology was discovered around 2045 and warp drive was made practical by 2110. Terra strove to reach out to its nearest neighbor, the stars in the Centauri Cluster.

Contact with Alpha Centauri came in 2138, followed quickly by contacts with Beta and Proxima Centauri. Contacts were friendly enough, and soon economic and political relations were established. Things seemed to be going quite well, and in fact, the two civilizations collaborated on a series of deep-space exploration missions to other star systems.

However, there was a problem under the surface. The populace of the Centauri Cluster contained a large number of psionicists. As psionic abilities became the subject of speculation and then fear, psi-enabled people were falsely accused of murder, rape, identity theft, and other crimes. By 2215, polarizing events had pushed Terra and Centauri into two armed camps, with Sirius and Andor siding with Terra, and Rigel and Merak siding with Centauri.

The Centauri War began in 2217 and lasted for five years. The war was remarkable in that few space battles were fought. After the Battle for the Argentine Nebula, where over 400 ships were lost, both sides changed their tactics and the war became one of guerilla fights and terrorism. The largest of such operations were the Terran Assault, where Centauri carriers launched over 5000 fighters that swarmed Terra, overloaded the planetary defenses, and then proceeded to attack the transportation system. Thousands of people were killed when their shuttles were attacked and destroyed by Centauri fighters. Enraged Terran politicians referred to the attack as the 23rd Century equivalent of the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941.

Retribution was swift. Terrorists linked to the Blood Hand clan attacked the various government organizations on Proxima Centauri. The largest target was the parliamentary council building. Large numbers of people were killed, and the planetary government on Proxima Centauri ground to a halt. The Blood Hand quickly dove underground, and governmen reprisals were ineffective. The Blood Hand continued to attack major targets, and the government of Centauri became almost a laughingstock.

Terra and Centauri agreed to peace terms at a conference in 2222, and in a surprise move, both governments unveiled with became known as the Imperium Treaty, which proved to be the foundation for the combined nation known simply as the Imperium.

After the consolidation of the new government, which genrally took about three years, a massive program of persecution against psionics began. Terran authorities, as well as the Blood Hand and other vigilante groups were let loose upon the population with little or no punishment for their excesses. And of course, with the defeat of Centauri, psi-enhanced people had no sanctuary.

Thus, by 2231, psionicists started to leave the Terran Imperium, heading northeast into uncharted territory. From that point on, the Terran Imperium consolidated itself and became more and more tech-oriented, as though to undo the years of contact with psionics.
