--- Physical Description ---

The Kressig are a lizard-like race with a long, but not prehensile tail. Their skin ranges from a pale white to light brown, and some members of the race have a more scaly skin texture. All Kressig have some amount of natural armor, independent of their skin type. They have four digits on each appendage.

The Kressig are a matriarchal society centered around clans and families. The Kressig developed in the marshy wetlands that cover most of the surface of their homeworld. They developed a clan form of government, organized around the family, with each litter constituting another rank within the family. While later-born Kressig are not high-ranking within their family, large families rank higher in Kressig society.

Having lifespans that range into the hundreds of years, the pace of Kressig technological advances was deliberately slow. As a result, the safety factors of most Kressig research projects, and the quality of Kressig technology tend to be higher because the Kressig can afford to put in the necessary time to get things right.

--- History ---

The Kressig discovered FTL travel about 800 years ago, and rather than a rapid expansion at a lightning pace, the Kressig expanded methodically, examining each star system they came to very carefully, making sure that any colonists would be safe and have adequate resources not only for themselves, but also for export to the homeworld. Thus, rather than a huge empire, the Kressig spent about 700 years forming the small collection of worlds that became the Kressig Alliance.

All of this would have been well and good except for events outside Kressig space. Human expansion into space was quite rapid, and they soon made contact with Centauri. After the discovery of psionics, Terra and Centauri spiraled into a devastating five-year war that ended with the formation of the Terran Imperium (See the Terran Imperium history for more details.)

The end of the Centauri War soon forced the foundation of the Domani Unity, which started a modest expansion program in order to find resources to aid in their defense. Domani southward expansion soon ran into Kerssig colonies and friendly contact was made.

In the meantime, Terran Wide Patrols headed by elements of the Blood Hand fanned outward in a huge expansion effort. They ran into patrols from both the Domani and Kressig fleets in the area near Elomyr. In the battle that followed, both sides suffered large numbers of casualties, but they were all able to withdraw. Within a year however, Kressig scouts made contact with the Empire of Somerset and discovered that they were surrounded by nations that hated each other.

Finding themselves in this situation, the Kressig decided that the only way they could save themselves would be if they could somehow control the forces of war when they were released. They cordoned off three sections of Kressig territory bordering on each of their neighbors, and established guard posts between these sections. The War Regulatory Commission was formed and each of the governments surrounding the Kressig Alliance were informed of this new system. The only thing the Kressig asked in return was the right to broadcast battles as they happened.

So far, this arrangement has worked. Two interstellar wars have been fought between the Terrans, the Domani, and the elves of Somerset, and in both wars, over 80% of the battles were fought in Kressig space in the areas designated as combat zones. The Kressig have been made rich by this deal, and they vigorously defend the rest of their territory from their neighbors. No one yet has tested the agreement, and there is debate as to how strong the government would be against any major war that would spill out over the designated areas.
