Night Life in the Klang Valley

Many first time visitors to Malaysia are not aware that the Klang valley has a throbbing Night Life. Like many foreigners, I was surprised to see the variety of Night entertainment (considering that Malaysia is a Muslim country) including Karaoke lounges, discotheques, pubs and night clubs that Malaysia had to offer, especially in the Klang valley.

To get a true feel of Malaysian night life, don't forget to visit a Dangdut Night club.

Popular mostly with Malays, they play, what else but 'Dangdut music' which is a form of Malay music with a nice rhythm. Sounded a bit like Hindi pop music to me.

I once went to one at Jalan Ipoh called Mawar Biru Night Club. By the way, the name means 'Blue Rose' in Malay. They had a live band and I had fun with my friends even though I couldn't understand a word they were singing. There was no cover charge for the guys but the Girls were pretty mad with the fact that they were the ones who had to buy a cover charge(for a change) and you can get a Guest Relation Officer (GROs) to accompany you (of course you have to pay for the service) but I am not sure whether they can speak english.

It was also the first time for my friends and that night they were dancing away like mad. However I was surprised that afterwards, they swore never to go back again. I think its due to the bad rep that Dangdut has in Malaysia. It is associated with the Indonesians and is now looked down by most of the people here. Say Dangdut! and I found that many of my friends would make a face and say UUUGH!

You can also find a lot of naughty old man dancing the night away, their drivers patiently waiting for them outside the dangdut bars, guarding their BMWs, Mercs, Jaguars and other costly cars.

However, I learnt that this form of music is slowly gaining in popularity among the younger crowd in Indonesia. MTV Asia even has a program dedicated to dangdut.
