Arena Football League Icons (v1) by Daniel M. Smith (dsmith4@bayou.uh.edu)

Welcome to my icon set for the Arena Football League. All of these icons
were drawn by me and me alone, though I owe thanks to many people who helped
me compile the info (see below).

For those of you unfamiliar with the league, here is a little background:

The league was conceived by Jim Foster in 1981 while attending an indoor
soccer game at Madison Square Garden. He diagramed the outline of the
smaller football field over a hockey rink on a manila envelope and the
The Arena Football League was born. If you want more info on the ArenaFL,

Here is a list of the files that you should now have, and a brief description
of each:

arena.txt - You're reading it
arena.ico - The Arena Football League logo. A ball flying through the uprights
with 'ARENA' written across it and 'FOOTBALL' underneath.
attack.ico - Sacramento Attack. Word 'ATTACK' over a circle. Nothing fancy.
barnsto2.ico - Iowa Barnstormers. It is supposed to be a set of goggles that
the wearer has put on the top of his head like a pilot.
barnsto1.ico - Iowa Barnstormers. A black I on the gold helmet. Used only
during the preseason of 95, their first season in the league.
bobcats.ico - Florida Bobcats. The head of a bobcat overlaying a football.
bruisers.ico - Chicago Bruisers. Just the word 'BRUISERS'. Nothing fancy.
cavalry.ico - Fort Worth Cavalry. A cavalry soldier riding a galloping horse
over a pair of crossed swords. I know, hard to tell, but trust me,
	that's what it is.
chawks1.ico - New York Cityhawks. The head of a hawk on a black helmet.
chawks2.ico - New York Cityhawks. The head of a hawk on a gold helmet. For
their first season they wore one color helmet at home and the other
away. I forget which was which.
cobras.ico - Los Angeles Cobras. An 'LA' with the left side of the 'A' being
formed by a snake head. Pretty clever.
commando.ico - Washington/Maryland Commandos. A shield with a 'C' with a star
in it streaking from the rear of the helmet.
coyotes1.ico - Connecticut Coyotes. A coyote head over a full moon.
coyotes2.ico - Connecticut Coyotes. Don't ask me where they got this one
from. It's the University of Michigan Wolverine's helmet with a
color change. Does anybody know why they changed from the cool coyote
	head to this thing?
drive.ico - Detroit Drive. A player carrying a ball on top of a star.
dynamit1.ico - Denver Dynamite. Exploding sticks of dynamite.
dynamit2.ico - Denver Dynamite. Exploding sticks of dynamite in a different
postition with a different color helmet.
fbirds1.ico - Albany Firebirds. A styalized bird flowing back from the front
	of the helmet. Really cool.
fbirds2.ico - Albany Firebirds. The head of the bird from their main logo.
No where near as cool as the old helmet. The head is too hard to see.
fdragons.ico - Portland Forest Dragons. The head of a dragon blowing fire toward
the front of the helmet. Hard to see.
force.ico - San Antonio Force. Just the word 'FORCE'. Nothing special.
fpike.ico - Minnesota Fighting Pike. A pike, which is a fish, leaping through
	the air. Ugly fish.
gladiato.ico -Pittsburgh Gladiators. A 'G' with a hand formed on the inside,
with the hand holding a sword. I always thought this was one of the
most clever helmets in the league.
hooters1.ico - Miami Hooters. An owl siting on an upright with the word
'HOOTERS' written across his face (the o's are the owls eyes). This
is the logo of the Hooters restaurant chain. The white helmet was used
because it was too hard to see the logo on the black helmet.
hooters2.ico - Miami Hooters. Same owl as above on a black helmet.
kats.ico - Nashville Kats. The kat from their main logo with a football in
his right hand, a guitar in his left hand, and the word 'KATS' written
	at the bottom.
knights.ico - New York Knights. The head of a knight holding a sword inside a
	circle.
marauder.ico - Massachusetts Marauders. A shield with 'MARAUDERS' written at
the top and a tiny head at the bottom.
mustangs.ico - Milwaukee Mustangs. A mustang streaking from the rear of the
	helmet overlaying an 'M'.
night.ico - New Orleans Night. A half moon with 'NIGHT' written across it and
	a star underneath.
pharaohs.ico - Memphis Pharaohs. Take a look at the 'P' they used in their
main logo and you'll see what they were going for here. The entire
helmet is supposed to look like the 'P'. Clever, but a really cool
	pyramid would have been better.
pirahnas.ico - Anaheim Piranhas. An 'A' with a bite taken out of it. Ho-hum.
They could do such cool things with this one, but...
predator.ico - Orlando Predators. Word 'PREDATORS' with clas below it ripping
their way out of the helmet.
rage1.ico - Charlotte Rage. The word 'RAGE'.
rage2.ico - Charlotte Rage. The word 'RAGE' with a different colored helmet.
rattlers.ico - Arizona Rattlers. An 'R' with a snake head inside it. Clever.
reddog1.ico - New Jersey Red Dogs. Their main logo, with the dog running toward
you carrying a ball coming out of his doghouse. Used only during the
	preseason of their first year.
reddog2.ico - New Jersey Red Dogs. The head of a dog.
rockers1.ico - Cincinnati Rockers. Word 'ROCKERS' with a football between the
	'R' and 'O'.
rockers2.ico - Cincinnati Rockers. Word 'ROCKERS' again, but this time with
	a green helmet.
rockers3.ico - Cincinnati Rockers. Again, 'ROCKERS', but this time with a
	green helmet and yellow facemask.
sabercat.ico - San Jose Sabercats. The head of a sabercat.
stampede.ico - St. Louis Stampede. Three horses streaking toward the front of
the helmet. Take a look at the team's logo to get a better idea.
steamrol.ico - New England Steamroller. A football player, who is on all fours,
with those big steamroller wheels under him and the word 'STEAMROLLERS'
streaking toward the front of the helmet.
sting1.ico - Las Vegas Sting. Just a gold helmet. Used only in the preseason.
sting2.ico - Las Vegas Sting. The word 'STING' with stingers going from the 'S'
forward and from the 'G' back forming a football with the word inside.
storm1.ico - Tampa Bay Storm. Word 'STORM' with a hurricane for the 'O'.
storm2.ico - Tampa Bay Storm. Same as above, with a silver helmet.
storm3.ico - Tampa Bay Storm. Word 'STORM' with a better hurricane for the 'O'
and 'TAMPA BAY' written above it.
tbolts.ico - Columbus/Cleveland Thunderbolts. A really goofy looking lightning
bolt moving back from the front of the helmet.
terror.ico - Texas Terror. Word 'TERROR' with a little tiny 'TEXAS' above it.
Why they didn't put the mascot from their main logo on the helmet I'll
	never know.
texans1.ico - Dallas Texans. State of Texas with the state flag in it.
texans2.ico - Dallas Texans. Same as above, but with a white helmet. I think
they wore the red one first.

I am attempting to put together helmets from the first two 'practice' games but
am having trouble nailing down what the helmets looked like. If anyone knows,
please contact me.

And now a quick note on how these icons were created. They were drawn with
Windows Paintbrush and converted into icons using The Icon Librarian. Since
I wanted everyone to be able to use them, I only used 16 colors. This allows
everyone running early versions of Windows to put them on their desktop. This
is why orange helmets appear the way they do. I had to use a mix of red and
yellow. Not the greatest of results, but you get the idea. You are free to
use these icons on your computer, and to share them with friends, all I
ask is that you give me credit for having spent the many hours to create them.

If you are wondering about white facemasks and stripes, here is the deal. To
avoid having to come up with background colors for every icon, I've made all
white facemasks and white outer stripes light gray. This allows me to treat
them the same way I treat all other colors. I don't feel it takes too much
away from the helmets, but if you disagree, let me hear from you.

Along with the AFL, I also have icon sets available for the following leagues:

National Football League
United States Football League
Canadian Football League
World Football League
World League of American Football
American Football League
All-American Football Conference
Professional Spring Football League (conjectural helmets)
Professional Indoor Footbal League
College Divisions
Fantasy Leagues
Custom Helmets

Check out my web site at http://www.geocities.com/Colosseum/Bleachers/4595/
to see which of these are currently available.

Also, if you have any requests for helmets to be made into icons, just let me
know and I'll try to put it together for you.

I would like to say thanks to the following people for their help in putting
these icons together. I could never have done it without them!

John Meyer who has helped me not only with the AFL, but with all leagues. I
ask him question after question after question and he never tires of
it. I owe him more thanks than I will ever be able to express!
John Fulgaro, publisher of the Sports Logo Guide. If you are interested in
logos at all, this is a must have resource.
David Marli who supplied info to fill a bunch of holes.
Sorry if I have left anyone out!

Hope you enjoy my icons, and let me know what you think of them! I love to
get feedback on my work!
