After kissing Duncan
goodbye, Sarah Jo left her house and headed over to the clinic to begin her day
of work. As usual, Dr. Shepherd was waiting with her. He had been taking samples
of her blood and urine every day for quite a while now, both before she
ovulated, and afterwards. Sarah Jo sighed when she saw him. "Duncan says
you must get some kind of weird pleasure out of poking me with needles,"
she said, grinning at him as he motioned her towards his lab.
"Well, you won't
let me poke you with anything else," he joked.
When she looked shocked at this, he chuckled.
"Yes, yes, I know, we must keep an eye on the gene pool.
Let's just say I am feeling somewhat randy this morning."
"Oh?" she
said, her eyes drifting down. Sure enough, there was a slight bulge in his pants
that wasn't usually there. She jumped up onto the exam table and started to undo
her blouse. She took it off and laid it aside, still covered sufficiently by the
lace edged chemise she wore as an undergarment.
Shepherd laughed.
"Perhaps I should have someone else do this today," he said,
his hand hovering over her breast for a moment before he brought it back.
"Are they tender?"
"A little,"
she said, "but it could be just wishful thinking."
"Your numbers have
been rising. A little more each
day. I'm encouraged."
He got a bit of rubber and wrapped it around her upper arm, in
preparation to take the blood.
By now, she knew the
drill by heart. She had excellent veins, so he never had any problem getting the
needle inserted into one. "Have you had any luck on finding an immortal who
is an *universal donor* yet?" she asked as she watched him fill several
vials of blood.
"Yes, as a matter
of fact, the young man Sean Burns has adopted is just the right blood
type!"
"Wonderful!"
she said as he undid the elastic, and then eased the needle out. A flash of blue
light sparked from the hole it had made, and it healed almost instantly.
"I still can't get
used to that," he laughed. "Don't
be surprised if Doc lifts the ban on your sex partners," he grinned,
lifting his specimens.
She looked up at him
with joy in her eyes. "Are you sure?"
"Almost sure.
This one might be the deciding factor," he said. "But it's not
my decision. I just give the
results."
Clutching her shirt to
her chest and chewing on her lower lip nervously, Sarah Jo stood just behind
Shepherd, watching as he ran his tests. Always thorough, he double-checked the
results with the second vial of blood while Sarah Jo tried not to fidget.
"Numbers have definitely doubled," he said as he sat back. "Congratulations!"
She squealed with
delight, throwing her arms around his neck and hugging him tight. "YES!!!
Thank you, Doctor! Thank you!"
He hugged back,
sighing. "Go tell Ben,"
he said. "He'll want to know."
"Oh yes!" she
said, planting a happy kiss on his cheek. She then ran out of the lab, not even
bothering to put on her shirt as she called out Ben's name excitedly.
She found the Immortal
doctor giving Temperance her daily medicine.
If Temperance was surprised by the nurse's state of dress, she kept silent. Shepherd had followed Sarah Jo, knowing that Adams would want to hear it from him too. "I'm sorry," Sarah Jo apologized. "I didn't mean to interrupt." She then realized she was still clutching her shirt and hurriedly slipped it on.
"No
interruption," said the young bride. "I'm
done. Thank you Doctor Adams," she said meekly as she got off
the table and headed for the door. "You
look like you have some good news," she smiled at Sarah Jo before she got
there.
"I do," she
said, whispering what it was into Temperance's ear.
The dark haired girl
went a little pale, but she hid it well, she thought as she smiled and squeezed
the little nurse's arm. She gave
every indication that she was thrilled with the news!
As Temperance walked
away, Sarah Jo turned back to Doc Adams, almost bouncing with joy. "It
took!" she announced. "I'm pregnant again!"
"Oh Sarah I am so
glad!" he said, hugging her. Then
before letting her go, he said, "Does that mean I am welcome in your bed
again?"
"Always," she said, her eyes misting over as he held her. "Always."
