Gulf War

The 3rd Battalion, 1st Field Artillery, 1st Armored Division Artillery deployed to Southwest Asia in December of 1990. The mission, to provide direct and indirect artillery support to the 3rd Brigade. As the story goes, we kicked ass. I was assigned to Alpha Battery, 3/1 FA primarily as the unit Nuclear, Biological and Chemical NCO. In short, I trained the unit to properly use and maintain their protective equipment and survive chemical attacks. Other jobs I performed during the operation included ammo resupply for the battery and during occupations, I assisted the Platoon Sergeant in getting the battery laid.

Pictured from left to right are SFC Nixon, SFC Kettleson, SFC Zaninelli, 1LT Lambert and me; SGT Swarr. We worked closely together for the duration of the deployment and; under the command of Captain Larossa; maintained control of the battery operations. This photo was taken shortly after the cease-fire was called. Nixon and I both belong to VFW Post #10592 in Bamberg.

To the left is a scene viewed on the move during a battle with the Republican Guard. The smoke and fire are coming from the Elite force that the 3rd Brigade destroyed moments earlier.
