Chapter 6
Two or three minutes
later, I had pulled myself up again, a bit. I couldn’t help but hammer the same
sentence again and again. “Finally i found something about her!”
Clutching the paper and
binder, I quickly went over to my dad.
“What took you so
long?” he questioned and i mumbled something about not finding binder that
easily. I handed it to him and went towards the tables where my aunts placed
all the foods and drinks. I grabbed a glass of water and let it go through my
throat, pondering what to do. From the corner of my eye, I saw Uncle Howie
coming near the table I stood by and taking a beer. Immediately an idea flashed
in my mind.
“Uncle Howie?” I said
sweetly.
“Yes pumpkin?”
“Uhmm...I wanna ask
you something that is really important to me and you know the answer i reckon.”
“If it’s something I
know, then ask.”
“Uhmm...do you have
some information about my mother?” I asked hesitantly.
He looked down, his smile
had faded away. He raised his head and looked into my eyes with a serious look.
“I’m sorry honey but
I can’t tell you anything about it.”
“Why?” I cried.
“Cos that’s what your
dad told us 17 years ago. We all promised not to tell you anything. I’m so
sorry.” He said and with quick steps he walked over to their manager.
I was desperate. Man,
didn’t I have the chance to know her? I entered kitchen, where i saw my second
hope, AJ Mclean.
“Hey Uncle AJ!” I
said sweetly. Again.
“Hey kiddo.”
“Uhmm...I...I think
you know something about my mother.” I piped up. His smile faded away and i saw
the same serious look on his face.
“Sorry girl, but i
can’t tell you anything about her.”
“Why? Don’t tell me
the same promise thing!!”
“Sorry, we promised
and i just can’t tell it.”
“C’mon Uncle Bone, I
know you can’t keep secrets.”
He let out a small
laugh. “Well, that was back then when i was young. You learn something as years
pass by.”
“So don’t you think it’s
time for me to know my mother? I lived 17 years of my life without a mother,
let me live the rest at least with some information. Please Uncle AJ, i beg
you.” I said and gave him one of my most desperate looks, knowing that he
couldn’t stand. He sighed.
“I didn’t tell you
that her name is Elizabeth Petterson and she lives in Ruskin right?” he
whispered.
“Yeah Uncle AJ, you didn’t.” I replied, my
heart beating non-stop.
