Chapter 21
"Nick,
it's been three days! And Angela still hasn't come home! She
hasn't called me. I have no idea if she's OK or anything," Krista
said, very concerned on the phone.
"I
know. Brian talked to her two days ago though and said that she's fine.
Just very upset."
"Yeah,
he told me all about it. But I think I'm gonna go see if I can persuade
her to come home. We need to talk. Her and I." Krista
glanced at her watch. "She should be up by now."
"Alright. Just remember to choose
your words carefully," he advised.
"I
know this girl like the back of my hand. I'll be fine. I'll let you
know how it goes."
"See
you later."
"Bye."
At the hotel...
"Come
on now! You're punishing me for something I didn't do. Why don't
you just come home? I'm not asking you to forgive him. Just some be
with me. I miss you," Krista pleaded with her best friend.
"I
want to, but..." Angela trailed off.
"But what?"
"I don't know. I just... I just
don't want to deal with him at home. I don't want to talk to him on the
phone, I don't want him at the house, I don't even want to talk about him.
What I'm trying to say is that I don't want to fall back in love with
him. I'm so confused right now. I've been betrayed and I'm heart broken.
I need some time and he needs to stay out of my life right now."
"OK,
OK. I can understand that. I'll do everything I can to make sure
that you have no contact with him. OK?" Krista promised.
"OK."
"Will
you come home now?" she begged.
"Yeah
sure. I'll go home," Angela smiled.
That night...
While Angela was in the shower, Krista called Brian to let him know what was
going on. She had promised that she'd keep him informed. She wasn't
sure why. "Maybe it's out of pity," she thought. That was
really the only thing she could think of.
"Basically,
you're screwed," she put it bluntly.
"You've
always had a way with words Krista."
"Thanks,"
she said proudly.
"So
does she even want to look at me?" he hoped.
"Like
I said, you're screwed. She wants nothing to do with you. She
doesn't want you calling her and she doesn't want to see you at the house. I
mean, I'm not even allowed to talk about you to her. If she catches me on
the phone right now, I'm gonna be screwed."
"Damnit,"
Brian muttered. "I guess I shouldn't have told her huh?"
"Well,
you could have just told her that you were sorry and that you really messed
up," Krista said with a short laugh.
"Oh
and Angela running away to the hotel wasn't screwing up either? That was real
mature."
"I
was just kidding. What do you want me to do about it?"
"Forget
about it. How are you and Nick?"
Krista
felt a smile creep up on her face. "Just fine. Actually, we're
going out again tomorrow night. By ourselves this time." She
emphasized the last sentence.
"Hey
now! Like I knew all that was going to happen."
"So
has he said anything about me?" she wanted to know.
"Well,"
Brian started. "I don't think I should tell you."
"Oh
come on! I told you about Angela," Krista shot back.
"Fine,"
he gave in. "We did talk once. I think two days ago. He
thinks you're cute. Which I do not see."
"I
heard that!" she interrupted.
Brian
laughed at her. "And he can't wait for tomorrow night. How's
that?"
"Perfect!"
She felt her smile get bigger. Just then she heard the bathroom
door open. "I gotta go now! Bye!"
"Bye,"
Brian said to nobody as Krista hung up the phone.
"Who
were you talking to?" Angela asked as she plopped down onto Krista's bed.
"Nick,"
she replied.
"Oh.
Well, I'm going to bed now. I need to sleep in my own bed. I'll
talk to you in the morning." Angela leaned over and gave Krista a
hug. Then she left for bed.
Krista
turned her head the other direction and looked out the window. Her smile fell
and guilt swept over her. She had just lied to her 'bestest' friend in
the whole world. "Not good," she thought. But she almost
felt bad for Brian because he meant well. And Angela, well, she ran away
from it. Krista wanted to see everyone happy. So she promised Brian she'd
tell him all she could.
She
laid down on her bed and prayed that Angela wouldn't find out. She'd tell her.
Eventually. But for now, she would try and silently patch things
up. Angela and Brian were meant to be together and the only thing that's
preventing them from it was her stubbornness.
