“Brian,” I heard Kevin’s weak voice say as I looked up at him.
“Hey, Kev, how you feeling?” I asked trying to
hide my sadness.
“Ok. just tired. How’s Nick?” he asked.
I cringed at that name as Kevin looked at me.
“He’s awake,” I said dully.
“Brian, what’s wrong?” Kevin asked.
“Well, if you would of saw what I saw and would
have been awake during our argument, you would of heard,” I said sadly thinking
back just to a few hours ago.
“Brian, tell me, please,” Kevin said, his voice
filled with sincerity.
“I went to his house the other day and saw opened
beer cans, cocaine, and the razor blade he used to cut himself. I asked him why, and his words mainly were
that I caused him to do it because I wasn’t there,” I said as tears filled my
eyes.
“So all he wanted was attention?” Kevin asked.
“No there’s still more. I saw knife carvings on
the wall. “I hate them”, “I wish they
would die”, and more painful carvings, but all those were caused by the cocaine
and the alcohol mixing in,” I said as I saw Kevin’s own eyes fill with tears.
I heard a knock on the door and saw Howie
standing there.
“Hey, Kev,” Howie said as he walked over and
hugged him.
“Hey, Howie, what’s wrong?” Kev asked as Howie
looked at us.
“A social worker wants to talk with Brian,”
Howie said.
“Why me?” I asked. “I don’t need it. Nick
needs it more then me. He’s the crazy
lunatic!”
Howie and Kevin looked at me.
“Bri, please go. He already talked to Nick, and Nick told him about your argument,
and he wants to help you” Howie said, with pleading eyes.
“Ok, I’ll go.
Where is he?” I asked, as I sighed.
“Right by Nick’s door,” Howie said as I got up.
“See ya later, Kev,” I said, as I walked out
and went to Nick’s door.
“Hello, Brian.
My name is Dr. Kindale,” he said, as he stuck out his hand, and I shook
it.
“Hello,” I said as Dr. Kindale looked at me.
“We could talk here or in my office,” he said.
“Here’s good,” I said as we both sat down. “Why
exactly am I here?” I asked, as he looked up at me.
“Nick wanted me to talk to you. He thought maybe I could help your
friendship along by helping you understand why Nick did this to himself,” Dr.
Kindale said, as I sighed.
“I know why already. I saw the whole thing,” I said.
“You witnessed it? Nick told me you were in Texas at the time,” he asked, giving me
a confusing look.
“I saw it all in a dream when I was waiting for
results on Nick and my cousin,” I said.
“Then why did you ask Nick why he tried to kill
himself for?”
“Because I wanted to know if it was because of
me, because of the cocaine and alcohol taking affect or because he wanted the
attention he wasn’t getting anymore,” I said.
“It was the affect of the alcohol and the
cocaine. The carvings are another example of the two mixing together,” Dr.
Kindale said as I nodded.
I heard a beep and saw Mr. Kindale look at his
pager.
“Hopefully you and Nick could work this out,”
he said as he looked back at me.
“I’m going to talk to him as soon as you’re
done asking me questions,” I said.
“Well, I’m done. You may go ahead,” Dr. Kindale said, as I nodded and walked into
Nick’s room.
