“Before we enter, I should tell you Mr.
Carter’s condition,” Dr. Martinez said as we stood outside of Nick’s hospital
room. “Mr. Carter is unconscious right
now because he lost so much blood.
Also, we had to put twenty stitches in his wrist from the cut.”
Dr Martinez opened the door as we walked into
his room. As we got closer to his bed,
tears came to my eyes. His skin was so
pale, like he was a ghost.
I
pulled up a chair next to his bed and held his hand, saying a silent prayer for
my friend. What made you do this
Nick? Was it because you called me a
friend, and I betrayed you? Fresh
tears fell down my cheeks as I closed my eyes.
I felt a hand on my shoulder, but didn’t bother
to open my eyes, knowing it was one of my two friends trying to comfort me, but
to my surprise it wasn’t.
“Brian?” I heard Kevin’s voice say as I opened my eyes in shock.
“What you doing here?” I asked as Kevin looked
at Nick.
“I thought about what you said, and you were
right,” Kevin said as he sat down next to me.
I heard a loud noise coming from the heat
monitor as nurses and doctors ran into the room and pushed us aside. A nurse
came up to us and led us to the door.
“Please go sit down in the waiting room. It will be a while before we know anything
about what happening to your friend,” she said kindly as we walked solemnly to
the waiting room.
I sat down in one of the uncomfortable chairs
as things ran though my mind. I looked
to the door and then to the guys who were sitting there silently, trying to
figure out a way to get out of here without anyone knowing.
I stood up and ran towards the door as I heard
my name being called by the guys. I
heard footsteps behind me as I ran through the damp grass and into the street
in front of the hospital.
“Brian
watch out!!” Kevin yelled as I stopped abruptly fear filling my body as the car
came towards me. The car was getting
closer and closer, but I couldn’t move for fear had taken over my body and held
me in place. Unexpectedly, Kevin came up behind me and pushed me out of the
way.
Realization hit me as I saw Kevin’s body lying
in the street without movement. I ran
to his side as AJ and Howie ran over to where I was and carried Kevin across
the grass and into the hospital as quickly as possible.
I ran into the hospital doors as they were
putting Kevin on a stretcher. I sat
down in one of the chairs as I watched them bring Kevin down the hall and out
of my sight. AJ and Howie sat next to me as I began to cry again.
“It’s all my fault,” I said as Howie put his
arm around me.
“No, it’s not, Rok. This is how things were meant to happen,” AJ said, as I put my
head on the back of the chair, staring at the ceiling until I finally cried
myself to sleep.
