Beach driving LIBBA

Lets just say the NYS laws concerning Beach Driving are archaic at best.

The NYS Park system treats surfers, and windsurfers as criminals.. The State Parks Outer Beaches, [most notably, Democrat Point, and Gilgo, aka. Hemlocks] have become the private domain of the Anti-Surfing Fishermans lobby.

When I was a kid growing up in and around Long Islands waters it sure seemed like it was an endless and wonderful resource. Now as an adult I realize this is far from reality. I see the difficult choices that must be dealt with on a day to day basis balancing economic, environmental, concerns with the publics usage, access, and safety.

Every time I tread out on that fragile sand bar we refer to as a barrier island I am grateful to the vision of Robert Moses. Where as the rest of Long Island is losing its waterfront and wet lands to private homes at an alarming pace, I am most grateful for a place where nature is allowed to take its course. A place where the next generation can surf, sail, swim, sunbathe, fish, kayak or just soak in Long Islands Natural Beauty. And I want to keep it that way.

Now I understand that the gut reaction of most environmentalists is then why do you drive on the beach?

Well we all pollute to some extent. Nobody has the higher moral ground. Walking would absolutely be the best way to access these remote beaches. But not every one is capable of that walk. Access by boat is possible, but that usually involves a two stoke engine. Two stroke engines create about 1,000 times the pollution than an auto. Buy some estimates they dump up to two thirds of their fuel unburned, directly in to the water.

So yes I do take my truck out on the beach. It is the only way I can take my wife along with me. And Id like to remain married to my wife, and let her share in my experience. When I was in my 20s and maybe even my 30s I could hike several miles in the sand with my gear. Now in my 40s, its not as doable. This is why I still end up surfing at Long Beach, RM5 or Gilgo more than any other spots. Its just a shorter walk.

And I 4X4 responsibly.  I air down my tires. I drive at least two car lengths up beach from either the ridge line or high tide mark. I pack everything in and out, including my human waste. That is just lower impact than a hard structure like a road, or building. The alternative is some rich guys private multi million dollar home. Ill take limited beach vehicle access any day.

Right: Recently weve sized up to an E350 Van with Quigley 4X4. It allows for more comfort, privacy, and gear to be safely locked inside.
