DAVID AND IRENE, part 3                                              by Nathan Coppedge

The next morning he went looking in a local grocery for some breakfast items. He bought a box of cereal and some milk, and then felt a sentimental pang for those poppyseed bagels. He went over to the bagel drawers, and checked twice, but there were none. Although there was one empty drawer covered in poppy
seeds. Theyve always got lots of bagels, he was thinking.

Then he went over to the cashier. Hey, you havent seen a girl come in here and buy all the poppyseed bagels have you? Dark hair, light skin, real pretty?

No, no not today. But there was this girl about two days ago, did that very same thing. Why dyou know her?

No, Id
like to know her.

He laughs. You must really like those bagels.
