Kangaroo

The largest and
best known of the pouched mammals (marsupialia) with the hind limbs enlarged for
hopping and a long thick tail. The pouch is well developed and contains four
teats. Gestation time is 30-40 days. The newborn is 2-3 cm long and at birth it
is in a state considered in mammals as being embryonic. After birth, the newborn
crawls along a saliva path his mother had marked, into the pouch where he is fed
and kept at a constant temperature. The kangaroo matures at the age of approx. 2
years and lives 15-20 years. When escaping, it can hop up to 10 m and advance at
a speed of up to nearly 50 km/h.
