Zoonotic Diseases

Certain canine diseases are communicable to humans, some of which are mentioned below :

 

Viral

Rabies / Hydrophobia (Rhobdo Virus) Infection is transmitted by dog bite, infected saliva entering through abradded skin. Lymphocytic chareomeningitis (L Meningitis Virus) Infection by ingestion.

Bacterial

Brucellosis (Brucella canis) Infection is transmitted by contact with infected secretions. Leptospirosis (Leptospiro spp) Ingestion of contaminated water, penetration through abraded skin. Tuberculosis (Mycobacterium tuberculosis) Infection is transmitted by ingestion and inhallation. Streplococcal sore throat (Leptospiro spp) Transmitted by ingestion or direct contact.

Fungal

Blastomycoses (Blastomyces spp) Sporotrichosis (Sporotrichum spp) Ringworm (Microsporum) Nacardiosis (Nacardia spp)

Mites

Scabies (Sarcaptes scabic) Follicular Mange (Demodex canis)

Fleas

Dermatitis (Clenocephalides canis)

Precautions for prevention of these diseases :

• Dog kennels, rooms, crates and containers should be vaccum cleaned regularly and disinfected with pesticides periodically.
• Their utensils should be cleaned properly and they should not be feed semi-cooked, uncooked, or spoiled food.
• Always wash your hands with soap after handling the dog.
• Before handling a dog with a zoonotic disease, its is advisable to protect your hands, eyes and face.
• Periodic vaccination and deworming is essential.
• Infected pets should be kept away from healthy ones and children should not be allowed to go close to them.
• You should refrain from kissing the dog and the dog should not be allowed not to lick anyone.
• Do not allow dogs to use the sofa, dining chairs and your bed.
