| I've followed this four piece hardcore group from Brighton ever since they started out in 2001. I'm not sure where or how I found them, but let's just say thank God I did. Their debut EP is called 'Econ' which contains five brilliant punk rock anthems, well maybe not that good, but the opener 'Different Dream' is really something special. From the moment you hear the rhythms of it, you get a feeling of Pennywise blasting through your ears. Excellent power-chordery and strong vocals make this EP excellent from the start, and there's even some amazingly high back-ups from Ade, and some group chanting of the title at the end. The boys interpretation of this masterpiece is - 'This song is about being labeled for something you are not just by the clothes you wear and the music you listen to.' Damn right. The next track 'The Wonderful' is a slightly happier affair, with a nice distorted riff all the way through, and again the back-up vocals on the chorus are very hard hitting. This is truly a feel good song. 'Spin' starts of with a bouncy ska riff, and is the slowest track on the EP. Still by no means a bad song, it even got some Radio One airplay from Steve Lamaq's unsigned session. Apparently the boys sent him peanuts and a can of beer to make sure he would play it. It has a fine guitar solo and some nice bassing by McFly. It's also tastefully themed, as Gage say - 'It's about that feeling you get when you have had too much to drink, and everything starts to go a little blurred' So that explains why Steve got free beer. The next song is the best song on the album. The opening bass riff is enough to send shivers down your spine. 'Corporate Whore' is a song about someone taking advantage of the music scene by going solo. The band show what they can do here, it truly is a punk rock anthem. The next track is regarded as the weakest song on the album by the band themselves, but I'll say it's underrated. Since the release of there debut EP, Phinius Gage have had a pretty sad member change with vocalist Damo leaving to tour the world or something, but Gage are now touring the whole of England for the first time. If you don't know this band which is very likely, then go check them out. If only bands like this could be getting there name out more the British Music scene would be as big as America's. With bands like this, that should all be about to change. reveiwed by rob, http://www.songwriters-guild.net |
