Napster was Good for everybody

Napster, the world famous peer-to-peer file sharing network for trading singles and albums on mp3 format. Many people object to file sharing networks because they feel that it's stealing and that bad for businesses. I think that it is good for businesses. Without Napster I would have never found out about Insane Clown Posse, Dazing and DJ DB and I would have never been a fan of Rammstein, KMFDM, and Fear Factory without it. Never would I have bought Psychopathic Records merchandise, go to live shows of Dazing, Insane Clown Posse, Twiztid, and Dark Lotus. There wouldn't be most of Fear Factories albums on my shelf. Rammstein to me would have just been those German dudes that did Du Hast and Engel. KMFDM would have never been important to me, and I wouldn't have bought DJ DB CDs for $18.

Its only stealing if you download and never buy. Dr. Dre once said that because of Napster it is hard for him to feed his kids. Metallica are just greedy, and those Elvis song writers are probably running out of retirement money. Once I tried buying a used Twiztid Mirror Mirror CD from Warehouse Music, and the clerk opened up the CD to make sure the CD didn't have many scratches. Unfortunately the CD wasn't there. Quickly I had a sigh of relief not because I saved money, but I thought to myself "Good thing I got the whole album on mp3". During the era of Rammstein's Mutter, I took it upon myself to download a couple of singles. Two of them being Links 2 3 4 and Sonne. I was amazed and right away bought Mutter, Sehnsucht and Herzeleid. I let my friend borrow my Mutter album and he gave it a listen and now hes one of the biggest Rammstein fans and also bought the CDs and the Live Aus Berlin DVD. Just proves that bootlegging, sharing, and "stealing" works and improves the music industry.

If Napster shows examples of anarchy, it also shows examples of American Freedom. Hopefully some day all of the great peer-to-peer file sharing networks will gather money and become one big vast music sharing behemoth. Only un-American thing about that would be a monopoly for file-sharing companies. MTV and major radio companies directly and subliminally tell you to buy some jerks album because they say you will like it. Next step, rent a bus and ship people off to the Record Store and force them to buy it. File-sharing doesn't have any of that trash. You've got the musical freedom and the musical silence and the joy of knowing that what you like is at your finger tips. Makes you feel like your in America.
