Somebody was a great band, formed in May of 1995. The original line-up consisted of Matt Naylor (Lead/Rhythm Guitar), Jason Townsley (Keyboards), Mike "Hemo" Hemelgarn (Lead/Rhythm Guitar)), Jason Gick (Bass Guitar), Corey Nowlin (Drums). This incarnation of the band played our first show at Rochdale Co-Op, on the campus of Purdue University in August of 1995, shortly after moving to Dayton, Indiana.. We recorded our first demo in Logansport, Indiana in September of 1995. After playing many shows in the Greater Lafayette area, Somebody gained a small fan base. One of these fans was Gary Ward. He helped the band grow as musicians and offered to record our first CD. Many of these recordings are still around. Shortly after venturing into the studio, Hemo and Somebody went in different directions. Hemo went on to form a band called Jimmy Proof. Somebody lasted as a 4-piece band for quite a while, until Kidd Deckard was brought into the fold. Kidd was a percussionist influenced by the Grateful Dead, Babatundi Olatunji, and nature. Kidd was a very caring individual and seemed to like everyone. Kidd brought in a former bandmate, Dave Larimore, on lead/rhythm guitar. This line-up was the most consistent when it came to the quality of music, kinship, and overall porductivity. We played throughout Indiana, including Lafayette, Indianapolis, Muncie, and the Annual Truffle Bluff Shin-Dig, which we put together every year for a July 4th celebration. In June/July of 1998 Somebody went out on our first tour!! Seth Milstein, our tour manager, brought his video camera and has tons of footage of the events that took place. We played in Crested Butte and Telluride, Colorado. It was cool to be playing that far away from home and seeing the sights in our bus. We used our time out west to look for another home. We went through the Grand Canyon and Flagstaff on our way to Phoenix. We arrived in Phoenix at midnight and it was 112 degrees!! I was miserable and everyone knew it. They hated me that night. We decided pretty quickly that Phoenix wasn't for us. Heading back north, we slept at a rest stop just south of Flagstaff. The next day was spent trolling around Flagstaff. It was evident that we were going to live there. The people were great...nice climate...and a great music scene. Matt and Gick stayed behind to set up base while the rest of us headed home to gather our belongings. Jason Townsley wanted to move on and decided to waive his right to keep playing music. He settled down with his wife, Tomoko, and resides in the deep south, working at a large CBS affiliate. He's happy. Maxwell Darwin Katz has a cool name and joined us as keyboardist extraordinaire. Living in Flagstaff was GREAT!! Our song list had expanded to it's greatest size. We renewed our interest in life and finally finished working on our long-awaited CD, Seedy. We played anywhere and everywhere...Phoenix, Tempe, Telluride, Prescott, Flagstaff...it was the time of our lives. We met some cool bands (Shortbus and Polliwog) and great friends (Ed Corcoran and Darren Mays). Besides playing music, we found time to actually go out and do things as a band. Seth loved getting us all together for all kinds of recreational activities. Rock climbing, hiking, and I almost actually went hang gliding with Darren. I basically helped and watched him fly...still pretty damn cool!!! But, alas, all good things must come to an end. We started our tour back east in June of 1999. We played several places in Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Chicago, Cincinnati, and of course Indiana. A meeting was held at Sgt Preston's of The North where some of us wanted to stay in Flagstaff and most of us wanted to stay in Indiana. This led Matt to walk out and miss that night's show. Eventually Matt decided to stay in Flagstaff and quit the band...I followed his lead. Somebody brought in new members and stayed together for another year or so. We still talk and Matt and Gick actually played at my wedding reception which was a thrill. We had a jam, but no Somebody songs were played. The legend remains.

The Rochdale Co-op is where the first Somebody took place...many were there, but will not remember this night. It was recorded and does exist. Bill Novack screamed and passed out.
Sgt. Preston's Of The North!!! Me and Matt worked, ate, played, I ate more, and we played more here. Monday night was schooner night. We played a ton and everyone talked over the music and drank heavily. We have the tapes to prove it.
We played here with Polliwog, one of the greatest funk bands ever!!! If you see them, tell them we said hello. They are in San Diego as far as I know. POLLIWOG!!
This is what we woke up to every morning for a year in Flagstaff, Arizona. Why did we move? Why?!?!?! Oh well, it's still there and the memories will last forever.
This is Charly's in Flagstaff. I have some bootlegs available from the shows we played here...nice place that vibrated extremely well when we did I Want You (She's So Heavy). Kidd was kicking some ass on the fan...yes, the fan. They loved it and we loved it more.
Can I tell you how much Telluride, Colorado kicks ass? Let me try...it kicks so much ass that we saw Gene Wilder at the Sheraton there. How's that? Alright, I know, Gene Wilder? But, Telluride does kick ass. Even the $8 roast beef deli sandwiches kick ass.
This is a place called ROMA (duh) in Telluride. We had to play there. Phish played their first gigs out of Vermont here and we felt that we had to at least do it once. I think we played there about 5 times. I may be wrong, but it was magical playing anywhere in Telluride...Garfinkle's, Roma, the bus...it was all good.
The legendary ELBO ROOM in Chicago. We played here on our Seedy Tour. We made it after Max finally sucked all of the diesel fule our of our gas tank. NOTE TO MAX: Regular gas is NOT diesel fuel. Quite a small venue, but quite a good time. Wilson guarded the bus and no one broke in. We rule and so does Wilson.
The best weekend Somebody EVER had was at this place...The Knickerbocker in Lafayette, Indiana. It's the oldest bar in Indiana. It was our homecoming gig of sorts. We had looked forward to these shows all summer and they didn't let us down. Packed house. Hot. Music lovers everywhere. We kicked ass. We jammed. We loved our lives those two nights. Another lesser known fact is that our 1,000,000 concert goer was in attendance this weekend. We'd like to thank Max Katz's father...he really loved the show. He boogied his ass off.
FUCK THAT!!!! WHY DID WE MOVE?!?!?!?!

OK, this is only picture I could find of Sonny's in Albuquerque. I don't even know these guys, but there they are. Anyway, this show was fantastic. We met a drunk guy that told us he could get us on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno. It never happend. BUT, the best part of the whole night was the guy that booked our show. We showed up and he helped us load-in after "elevating" himself. After the show he helped us load-out and then he came on-board for a send off we'll never forget. He was already feeling pretty good and started feeling much better very quick. He was on the bus for a good 45 minutes. We were ready to go, but he couldn't get up. Finally he makes his way to the front of the bus where he sits on the steps and starts to breath very heavy. Then, the obvious happened. HOOAAAARRRRK!!! Vomit all over the steps of our beautiful bus. Then, he looks at me in the driver's seat and says, "Man, I'm coming up with all of the crazy rap beats in my head, man." He said MAN twice and he was really messed up. So, we get the water out and wash the steps off and start the bus. He goes to his car and sits there FOREVER!!! Before we leave, we realize he's left his cell phone on the bus!!! So, I take it out to him. He rolls down the window, which is steamed up really bad, just enough so the phone fits in. Looking straight ahead he says, "Thanks man." He was gone!!! He may still be sitting there for all we know, but that was the BEST part of the tour for me. I'll never forget that night. OK, I'll shut up now.
