Amateur Radio (Ham Radio)
Yes, I am an amateur radio operator.  I recieved my Technician License in May 2002.  Technician, is the first step in Ham radio.  With a Technician License, a 2 Meter radio, and a good atenna, you can talk up to 80 miles away.  With a General Class License, you can talk world wide!  My friend Brian helped me study for the Technician test.  Brian is also a Technician.  Ham radio is kind of like a chat room on the internet, but more professional.  We use radios to communicate with one another.  We talk about our friends, family, hobbies, what we did that day.  Just  pretty much small talk.  However if their is an emergency, some Hams volunteer with with other originations, such as Ares, Races, or The Americian Red Cross. When you get your License, it's good for ten years then you can renew it if you choose to do so.  I'll pick up my radio every once and a while, chat and listen in to see who's on the air.  The only draw back is the equipment can get expensive depending on what features you want on your radio.  An aversge a 2 Meter hand held radio can start at $100.00.  Now if you want to talk world wide, then the radio's can be expensive.  The world wide transceivers can be anywhere from $400.00 to $4,000.00.  It can be a rewarding hobbie, and it has saved lives!
