The Ogham symbols were used as a calendar (currently made famous as the "Celtic Tree Calendar").  Why trees?  Trees are an integral part of Celtic belief.  To the Druids, trees are sacred part of nature.  The roots of most trees extend far below the surface- most root systems are as large as the tree itself.  To demonstrate their belief that thing sin the unseen world are as great as they are in the seen world, the Celts used this analogy, and used the phrase "As Above, So Below" to exemplify it.
For the purposes of the Ogham, thirteen main symbols are used.  Each of the thirteen trees/symbols has a corresponding month.
