Dressage is the basis for all other forms of riding. If you can't control your horse at the different paces, you can't jump or compete in any other type of sport. But don't get the impression that dressage is basic. It gets very competitive in the upper levels, and can be more challenging than jumping because it takes years to teach a top dressage horse his stuff, and it takes the rider years to learn principles, too. The exercises done in the arena are called menage patterns. Menage means arena or training area. Here are some moves in top level dressage: |

Piaffe:
A trot in place
Piourette:
The turning in place at a canter. The horse rotates around it's hind legs, and it is best if a complete circle is done in 6 to 8 strides. It should be the smallest circle possible.
Half Pass:
Moving frontwards and sideways at the same time at a trot along the diagonal of the arena. the side legs goes out, and the others cross over them while the horse is going diagonally.
Flying Lead Changes:
Done at a canter. The horse changes leads between each stride. It looks like the horse is skipping.

The lippizaners from the Spanish Riding School of Vienna do very highly advanced dressage that is normally not used in the show ring called Haut Ecole. These moves were developed for war horses to get away from enemies. Today, they still give performances for horse loving audiences. Here is one of the Lippizaner horses: |
