Research involved synthesis of porphyrin based compounds for cancer treatment using Photodynamic Therapy.   4. Planning Committee: for Kansas City Professional Development Council (KCPDC). 1998 and 1999. Representing Park University in the arranging and coordinating of the “Workshop for Multicultural Enhancement in the Classroom” and “Exploring Service Learning” for about eight local area colleges which participate in the KCPDC program.
  5. Library Committee: (1998) committee worked on getting funding and resources for library.
  6. Task Force for Honors Program: (1998) To foresee the revitalization of the honors program at Park University.
  7. Curriculum Committee: Member (1999), Chair (2000). Established the Honors Program.
  8. Advising Committee: Chair (2001). Revised and updated the entire Faculty Advising Handbook.
  9. Core Advisor: (1999-2003). Responsible for advising incoming Freshman, undeclared students and teaching the New Student Seminar, a 3cr. hour class.
  10. Mallard Coordinator: (2000) Coordinator for faculty for the Internet teaching software Mallard.
  11. New Student Seminar Coordinator: (2001-2003) Coordinating and mentoring eight faculty/staff who teach the New Student Seminar (SS100) course. Recruited, trained and mentored student mentors for each section of the SS100 class.
  12. Assessment Committee: (2002) Working in the faculty assessment for accreditation by North Central Accreditation.
  13. Retention Committee: (2003) To study current retention rate and develop a rigorous retention plan on the Park University campus.
  14. Faculty Policy and Development Committee: (2004) To work on faculty policy on evaluation and hiring as well as professional development.
  15. Teaching and Scholarship Workshop: (2005) Work on how we can achieve scholarship while teaching actively in a liberal arts institution.

  20. QEP Committee: (2008). A committee designed to implement a Quality Enhancement Plan.  In this case it was a first semester, going global course across the university to enhance global awareness of incoming students.
  21. Curriculum Committee: (2010-11). Participate in evaluation and approval of curricular changes at Palm Beach State College.
ACHIEVEMENTS
  • Internet Course - (1997) Developed Chemistry and Society (CH301), a Liberal Learning course and offered it on the Internet as part of the ongoing development of courses for distance learning.
  • Chemistry and Freshman Seminar Web Pages – created and maintain the web pages for chemistry department and Freshman Seminar courses. Created Webpages at http://park.edu/chemistry and SS100 (Freshman Seminar)
  • Chemistry Club – (1997) Initiated and formed a Chemistry Club, Student Affiliate Program, in the department.
    Co-Teaching – (2001) developed and co-taught the Forensic Science course with Dr. Greg Plumb, Professor of Criminal Justice. (2004) Developed and co-taught History and Culture of India with Dr. Ronald Miriani, Professor of History.

  • Student Mentor Program for SS100 – (2003) Initiated a peer led mentor program for first year freshman class (SS100). Junior and senior students were chosen to mentor the freshman students.
  • Initiated a Service Learning Course to be taught in Brasil – (2005) Visited Recife, Brasil, on a Park University sponsored visit to initiate the Global Education initiative of Park to incorporate Service Learning in its curriculum. While in Recife, offered workshops to two universities on the on-line program at Park and Service Learning.
  • Initiated a Collaborative for Service Learning Project – (2006) Worked with three institutions to do a two week collaborative service project in Hawaii.
  • Global Citizenship Program – (2007-08). Selected as faculty leader to lead a group of eleven Shenandoah University students, staff and faculty on cultural experience trip to India during spring break.
GRANTS RECEIVED
  1. Lilly Grant – (1997) Wrote a Lilly grant and obtained funding ($6,500) for incorporation of multiculturalism for Introductory Chemistry, a chemistry course for the health sciences.
     
  2. Strategic Action Plan – (1997) Awarded funds ($19,000) to obtain new equipment for the chemistry laboratories.
     
  3. Faculty Endowment Fund – from Park University:
    • 1998: ($750) to organize a symposium and present papers in the Biennial Conference in Chemical Education and registration fees ($350) to present and attend the SYLLABUS98 conference.
    • 2000: ($800) to organize a symposium in the Biennial Conference in Chemical Education in Ann Arbor, MI.

    • R.A. Long Foundation Grant – received $5,000 in November 2000 to continue the Science Camp for 4-5th Grade girl-scouts on Park University campus.
    • Kauffman Foundation Grant – received $1,500 in November 2002 to offer the Sister-to-Sister Leadership workshop, for middle school girls, in partnership with American Association of University Women on Park University campus.
    • Awarded $800 from COACh - in March 2003 from an organization for coaching women in Chemistry, to attend negotiation workshop in New Orleans, LA.
    • Kauffman Foundation Grant – received $2,725 in January 2004 to offer the Sister-to-Sister Leadership workshop, for middle school girls, in partnership with American Association of University Women on Park University campus.
    • American Chemical Society Community Grant – received $2,000 in September 2004 to conduct chemistry and science related workshop for Kansas City Elementary school teachers.
    • ACE Global Service Project Grant – received $5000 from ACE. Worked with Ms. Olga Ganzen (Director of International Education and Study Abroad) on writing (and receiving) a collaborative grant, with three other institutions, to initiate a service learning project in Fall 2005 which was culminated in a community service project and conference in May 2006.
    • ACE Course Internationalization Grant: received $700 to incorporate internationalization in Chemistry and Society, a Liberal Learning course.
       
  6. From 2007 - present
    • Professional Development Grant for Arts and Sciences ($12,000): Received grant funds to purchase a new instrument, U-Vis Spectrophotometer, for undergraduate research purpose.
    • Faculty/Student Collaborative Scholarship Fund ($400): these funds have been used to purchase chemicals and research books for undergraduate research students.

  • American Chemical Society: (1997 -2000) National Chemistry Olympiad, Science City Festival and National Chemistry Week (performed Chemistry demonstrations for elementary school children).
  • American Association of University Women: (1998 - 2000) Organized and arranged exhibits for the Women’s History Month (March) in local coeducational elementary and high schools.
  • Sister to Sister Summits: (1999 – 2005) Helped to organize, fund and implement sister to sister program of AAUW in the community. A day long leadership workshops were arranged for middle school girls of Platte county.
  • National Chemistry Week and Elementary School Outreach: (1997-99 and 2003) Visited and performed chemistry demonstrations to elementary school children in Parkville area.
  • Science City Festival: (1996, 97) Held at Union Station, Kansas City, in the month of October. Introducing chemistry to children and adults.
  • Science By Mail: (1996 - 98) Pen Pal Scientist for three years to about twelve children annually, who conduct science experiments and mailed them to me for grading and feedback.
  • National Chemistry Week: (Halloween, 1998-2005) Arranged a Mall Event for promoting Chemistry in the community. The event is expected to bring more than 350 people, children and adults to a two hour hands-on activities in chemistry. The event was advertised on three different morning shows, NBC, FOX and CBS. It was also advertised and featured in local newspapers.
  • Park University Community: helped in Library Book Sale (1998-2000), Recruiting (1999-2000)
  • Kansas City Public Television Event: (2002-2004) Volunteered at the Speaking of Women’s Health Conference held in Fall.
  • Synergy – Duck Derby event: (2004) Volunteered at the Synergy annual Duck Derby fundraiser for Synergy services.
  • Kansas City Public Television Art Auction: (2004) Volunteered at the PBS television station to help auction donated art pieces.
  • Speaking on Women’s Health: (2002-2007) Volunteer annually at the Public Television and Shawnee Health System sponsored event on women’s health.
