COURSE DESCRIPTION
An introduction to service learning as relevant to student’s discipline. Students will design and implement a community project to be completed by the end of the course. The course will be taught partly on campus and will include a two week trip outside USA for on site project completion. 3:0:3

FACULTY’S EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY
My main objective is provide relevant and sufficient amount of knowledge to all the students at the appropriate levels: a) make sure that students understand the idea I am trying to convey, b) prepare students for the next level of education, c) develop the understanding of students, such that they adapt the process of thinking rather than memorizing facts and principles, d) develop practical skills and techniques to work confidently in their work place, e) demonstrate how their field of study is part of their daily lives, and f) to use alternative and diverse methods of teaching to keep students motivated and interested during the course of their study in the semester, and hopefully for the rest of their lives.

• To enhance student creativity by designing a project.
• To promote student learning by doing i.e. learn by experience and action.
• To meet community needs through direct service which is meaningful and necessary.
• To help students see the relevance of their academic field in the real world.
• To increase civic skills of the student.
• To provide cross-cultural experience.
• To give the student a greater responsibility of their learning.
• To provide a global perspective on student’s education.

COURSE TEXTBOOK(S)

ACADEMIC HONESTY
“Academic Honesty is required of all members of a learning community. Hence, Park will not tolerate cheating or plagiarism on tests, examinations, papers or other course assignments. Students who engage in such dishonesty may be given failing grades or expelled from Park.”

PLAGIARISM
Plagiarism—the appropriation or imitation of the language or ideas of another person and presenting them as one’s original work—sometimes occurs through carelessness or ignorance. Students who are uncertain about proper documentation of sources should consult their instructors.”

ATTENDANCE POLICY
Instructors are required to keep attendance records and report absences. The instructor may excuse absences for cogent reasons, but missed work must be made up within the term of enrollment. Work missed through unexcused absences must also be made up within the term of enrollment, but unexcused absences may carry further penalties. In the event of two consecutive weeks of unexcused absences in a term of enrollment, the student will be administratively withdrawn, resulting in a grade of “F”. An Incomplete will not be issued to a student who has unexcused or excessive absences recorded for a course. Students receiving Military Tuition Assistance (TA) or Veterans Administration (VA) educational benefits must not exceed three unexcused absences in the term of enrollment. Excessive absences will be reported to the appropriate agency and may result in a monetary penalty to the student. Reports of F grade (attendance or academic) resulting from excessive absence for students receiving financial assistance from agencies not mentioned above will be reported to the appropriate agency.

LATE SUBMISSION OF COURSE MATERIALS
1. Class quizzes cannot be made up.
2. Assignments are to submitted on the dates given during class. 30% of the score will be deducted for each day the assignment is submitted late.
3. Assignments submitted after one week will not be accepted for grading.
4. Presentations are to be punctually. 50% or less credit will be given for late presentations.

COURSE ASSESSMENT

  1. Quizzes: there will be some pop quizzes during the semester. Most quizzes will be 5-10 mins long.
  2. Assignments: these will be assigned during the class. Students are also required to keep a journal for their experiences throughout the semester.
  3. Project: student has to complete small projects as part of the course. The project can be divided into several small projects or one big project. This will be presented in the class before carrying it out on site.
  4. Class Participation: there will be a continuous assessment of class participation. Class participation includes: attendance, submission of assignments, participation in class discussions/activities etc.
  5. Field Work: there will be a two week trip to Recife, Brasil where the student will successfully complete the proposed project on site.

CLASSROOM RULES OF CONDUCT
1. There will be no drinking or eating in the classroom, unless approved by the instructor.
2. All assignments submitted should be stapled, neat and legible.
3. Any report submitted should be printed using a printer that has black ink. Colored reports will not be accepted unless the color is on a graph or picture.
4. Tardiness in coming to class, late submission of homework will constitute in a loss of class participation points.
5. Rude behaviour towards the instructor or a colleague will not be tolerated.
6. Students should avail all opportunities to participate in class, a disinterest in class participation will lead to loss of class participation points

What community service have you done previously and what did you learn from it? What would you change if you could about that experience?
2 Diversity and cultural awareness Assignment 2:
Write two page description of an experience you had outside your “comfort zone”. For example, visiting another country, feeling like a minority or the experience of discrimination against you or anyone close to you.
3 Projects to be done in the field Assignment 3:
One page outline of the project you will like to do in Recife.
Justify your reasons for doing the project and what the project outcomes will be.
What are the learning outcomes for yourself from doing this project?
4 Project to be done in class Brief presentation of the project in class.
5 Final discussion on carrying out project. Discussion on the trip to Recife.
