These are my recipes for fighting colds..
Cajun Cough Stopper 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice 3/4 cup freshly squeezed orangejuice (Or orange- grapefruit and lemon juice combined) 1 teaspoon of honey 1/4 cup bourbon Add the spices to the juice and mix well. Bring mixture to a boil then pour into a cup. Add the honey. Add the bourbon. Inhale the steam and sip the liquid slowly!
Apple Tea 2 or 3 cooking apples (unpeeled, cored, and sliced 3 cups cold purified water 2 cups boiling water 1 teaspoon freshly squeezed lemon juice 1 teaspoon honey Place apples and cold water in a heat proof jar and cover (don't seal tightly). Set the jar in a saucepan and pour in the boiling water. Simmer for 2 hours, add more water to the pan as you need it. Remove the jar from the heat and strain the apple mixture. Add the lemon and honey and drink it hot.
Elixer 1 bosc or red Bartlett Pear 1 teaspoon rock sugar 1 cup purified water 1 tablespoon rice wine, optional Cut the pear in half and core it, leaving the stem. Fill the cavity in each halve with the sugar. Place the pear in a sauce pan and add the water and the rice wine. Cover and boil 15 to 20 minutes. Strain and drink ; yes eat the pear!
Sniffle Chaser 6 dried shiitake mushrooms 8 cups purified water 1 (3 oz) piece of fresh ginger root, sliced thinly 6 cloves of garlic 6 pieces shaved astragalus root ( you can find this at natural stores or at Asian Stores) 4 teaspoons light miso Soak the mushrooms in 2 cups water for 20 minutes. Do not discard the soaking liquid b/c it is the "medicine" of this. Bring the remainding 6 cups of water to a boil and add the ginger, garlic and astragalus. Reduce heat to a simmer. Mix the miso with 8 tbsp. of the hot liquid to form a smooth paste. Add the miso, mushrooms, and mushroom soaking liquid to the herbs and hot water. Simmer 30 minutes. Strain and drink hot. The broth can be stored in the refrigerator for 2 days.
