Health Advisory

New diseases which affect birds **and** humans are becoming ever more prevalent. Of particular importance are the "Bird Flu", and the "West Nile Virus". Both these infections, as well as other diseases, can be fatal to people. Extreme caution are required when dealing with wild birds. Gloves and masks are highly recommended, as well as meticulous cleaning practices. Children should never be allowed access to wild birds or nestlings, nor household pets, which may also trasmit them.

Even with safeguards such as these, it is still possible to catch these illnesses. Caring for wild birds is completely at your own risk! Now, more than ever, it is strongly recommended to find a professional bird rehabilitator if you wish to have a bird saved.

If you suspect you may have caught an illness from a wild bird, visit your doctor or hospital immediately!

Please do not underestimate the seriousness of these illnesses. There are no vaccines or cures for the above mentioned virii, and many other diseases or parasites can cause you great suffering as well. Weigh carefully whether it is really such a good idea to deal closely with a bird or nestling.

Here are two links describing the "West Nile Virus" and "Bird Flu".

Thank you, and please be careful.

This website is not intended to replace the expert care that is only available by professional rehabilitators. The use of this website is only intended for those where the option of bringing an orphaned bird to a rehabilitator is not possible. By raising a wild bird yourself, you greatly diminish it's chances for survival. Please check this link for a rehabilitation center in your community: http://www.tc.umn.edu/~devo0028/contact.htm. If none are listed near you, call a local animal shelter, veterinarian, or wildlife office/agent for information on local rescue centers. Thank you.
