Eoin Kelly 1927 - 2005
Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann has had a presence in Dromore since the organisation's inception in the early 1950's. Over the intervening decades some of Ireland's finest exponents of traditional music have had deep-rooted associations with the Dromore Branch. Ironically the branch is planning to host a commemorative event in honour of Eoin Kelly, whose reputation as an exemplary gael was forged far beyond Dromore. Eoin spent 50 years in Glasgow, where he committed himself selflessly to the cause of Ireland's cultural heritage amongst the 'Irish abroad'. This ever-proud Fermanagh man came to live in Dromore in 2001 in search of a retiring comfort derived from his beloved cultural pursuits in traditional music, song, dance and games. Sadly he was taken from us in September 2005, but during those short four years he made a phenomenal impact on the development of music and singing in his adoptive community. His experience, network of contacts and credibility were evident in everything he turned his hand to. Above all, however, his commitment, enthusiasm and passion epitomised his involvement. He proudly assumed the role of Branch Chairman, which engendered in him a pride that characterised his sense of belonging to a community racy of its locality and respectful of its heritage.
