Final Preparation

Marching line by line in ordered sets,
The colonel states his final roll call.
Sweat drips effortlessly off my forehead,
Attention givesway to the regret.

Admirals pass one by one - inquiring,
They look at each and give a sigh of grief.
"We did all that we could, sir."
Never an excuse but never the truth.

Off to battle in this final war,
Those who know will get the spoils,
The honor, the glory, and the medals.
If only we had just one more...
