Al Bhed Language

Rikku - A young Al Bhed girl

Al Bhed is the language spoken by the Al Bhed in Final Fantasy X. Strictly speaking, it is not really a language but a cipher. It works by scrambling the English letters so that the sentences are completely unintelligible. However, it sounds like a foreign language, and it would take a few months to be able to speak it fluently. It is spoken with a heavy Slavic accent, though it is not considered a dialect of English.

This guide will help you translate to and from Al Bhed. However, certain words are not translated. Names of people and places are not translated, because if they were Rikku would be called 'Neggi' and Kilika would be 'Gemegy'. Subjects of sentences are not translated either, as when Rikku's men ccapture Tidus, they say "Y fiend! Eh risyh teckieca!" ("A fiend! In human disguise!"). Fiend is the subject of the sentence, so it is not translated either.

To translate English text into Al Bhed, use the English to Al Bhed table above. Many people try to translate by using the Al Bhed - English table first! This produces a sentence that looks Al Bhed, but is actually complete gobbledegook.

If you want to learn how to quickly translate Al Bhed, remember it little by little. First, know the formula. See, there is a certain formula which makes Al Bhed quite unique, but easy to learn. All of the vowels are grouped together and scrambled, while the consonants are scrambled amongst each other.
Another quick way is to keep remembering the easier words in Al Bhed and then you know what comes as what. Easy words to remember are "Cunno" ( "Sorry") and "Fyed" ("Wait") for example. Since you already know that C = S, U = O, N = R, and all of that. You already know 7 words there and what they are translated to in English, not bad out of 26. Now apply those 7 you know, and you now can translate words such as "Fyn" ("War") or Duo ("Toy"). It's real easy.
