| These activities do not fall into a particular theme or a sub topic, however, these are related to all of the themes and sub topics. Studying Kanjis is not easy for most students and not fun at all, although senior students are required to recognize and use kanjis with confidence and competence. Students need learning skills and some fun for studying kanjis. These activities can be used when you introduce a new set of kanjis and/or when consolidating them. The first activity is for students to analyze the kanji and its meaning so that they can develop the skills to guess the meaning of unknown kanji. The task for the students is to look at the kanjis presented and find the similarities, which are the radicals, and put into groups. Then guess what each group is related to, for example, water, tree, room and so on. Teachers also can check if the students have learned gonben, ninben and other radicals before. The second activity is for students to look at a part of kanji and guess the meaning and the other half of the kanji. The students can check if their guess is correct or not by the picture on the backside of the kanji. Other activities using kanjis are: *Kanji karuta - the teacher calls out in Japanese and the students have to find the matching kanji. The student with the most cards is the winner. *Show a part of a kanji and reveal little by little. The first student to guess the kanji is the winner. *Kanji eye chart - check your eyesight with the kanji eye chart. *Kanji bingo *Show a kanji and get students to say the verb or adjective forms. *Concentration *Association game - the teacher gives a hint to help students guess what the word/kanji is. A set of kanjis is provided. The teacher gives up to 3 hints. The hints can be a full sentence in Japanese. For example: Yasumi tanoshii desu. gakkou ga arimasen kaze o hikimashita. *Take 2 kanjis from a mystery bag and make a sentence using the kanjis picked. For example: kyo (in Tokyo) & taberu tokyo ni tuita toki totemo onaka ga suite ita node onigiri o tabeta. *Where is the mistake? - parts of kanjis are not correct.
