Pre- Reading Activities

1. Grouping Activity
    Give 2 sets of the picture cards to students.  (pictures from the book)
    Find someone who has the same picture by describing it.
       Do you have a frog in your picture?
       Does she look happy?
       Is she looking at the sea?
      etc

2.  Each pair presents their picture to the class and explains what is happening in
     the picture.

3.  Guess what this story is about, what will happen, why the girl is loking sad, etc.

4.  Go through the book page by page up to page 5, where the girl tries to end
     her life.

5.  Open - Question
     Why does she want to end her life?
     How much time do we need for our hearts to be healed?
     How long do we cry for the dead?
     It must be hard if someone close to you died,

6.  OHP Reading & Other reading style
     Short stop at page 20.
     Question
     Do you think she will say yes?

7.  Open - Question
     In pairs, think what would have happened to her if she didn't find the frog.
     What would you do if you were Gertrude?
     Do you think she was sorry that she didn't marry again?

8.  Conduct a survey on how people would overcome tragedies.
     After collecting the data, explain in your own words in a few sentences.
     Add your opinion as well.

9.  Write what you think of this story in the diary.  ( A few sentences )

     It must be hard ...../ It must have been hard.....
     I feel sad .......
     I think Gertrude was lucky because ...


    e.g.
    Maybe I would cry less after 3 days and stop crying after 1 month.  But I would
    be still sad and I would remember the person every now and then.
I love Roald Dahl's and Quentin Blake's stories.  Most of our students do too!!
